    I put an arrow to where I think the striking error started A009 - 20151025_204437 (2).jpg A004 - 20151025_202627 (2).jpg A001 - 20151025_200349 (2).jpg A005 - 20151025_203521 (2).jpg A011 - 20151025_210120 (2)-tile.jpg

Maybe it's a Struck Through issue?

I was also thinking it could be Intentional die abrasion .
    But I'm not sure ...

Very cool error . But I don't think it started by the arrow , since it has issues all over struck through grease is very plausible . @Jim M .

    You are absolutely correct.

As dies get abraded and reused, the fields get abraded away since they are the highest point on the die. As they abrade away, the fields get "raised" on the coin which is what causes these open area.

This is not uncommon for the Washington Quarters nor the Kennedy's nor the Eisenhower Dollars.

So you're saying this is like the '37 3 legged Buffalo and polishing caused the weak areas ? Though I always thought the high areas would disappear 1st .

The high areas on the coin are the DEEPEST depressions in the die. As the surface of the die is polished away the shallowest depressions in the die are lost first and those areas represent the lowest relief areas on the coin.
