I bought this dime recently from the LCS for $3 and wanted to know if I was getting a good deal here. The photos aren't the best, but what do you expect from an iPod? All of LIBERTY on the headband is showing, and the denticles are pretty well struck on the obverse and partly mushy on the reverse. Also, the obv and rev are switched: the rev is the obv, and the obv is the rev. So, what do you think? Did I do well, and if so, what is the value of this piece? Next up in my value questions is an 1888 Liberty Head Nickel.
It's not a very expensive coin to begin with. A F12 sells for $6 a VF20 $9. It first has meaningful value at XF40, around $30. At three dollars you can't go too wrong. If you had to pay a delivery fee, you probably broke even on all out of pocket expenses including the purchase price. I can't see the necessary detail on the reverse because of poor focus and the dark areas on the coin. There may or may not be something hidden there. It's an okay item to start your collection going.
@saltysam-1, I bought the coin right inside the LCS so the total cost was $3. I usually buy whatever looks cool. I've been collecting coins for a while and this is only a recent addition to the collection.
Glad someone's on the ball here. File names.... oy vey! Certainly not a big deal or one worth the confusion. Thank you regardless.
I like it. It's a nice starter. I am tending to collect Barber dimes myself, but I am going for BY or AU. Of course key dates not withstanding. I can't get enough of the Barber design.
I would be happy with that purchase, looks like a very nice coin, maybe had an old cleaning at one point though, still worth buying for $3
VF is probably a little optimistic, and the reverse looks to have problems. Can't tell if the obverse has been cleaned in those pictures, but something feels weird about it. $3 is probably a good price for it. It might be worth up to $5, but that's as high as I'd go.
I just asked because you said you have been collecting for a while and well most of us grumpy guys dont say that till we reach the 20 year mark lol. 3 bucks for a barber dime is just fine and even if cleaned it could fill the hole of an album down the line.
A good point in general is to be wary of what information members put in their profile. Someone could be a 65yr. old male with previous convictions and claim to be a 17 yr. old female orphan trying to sell coins for her granny's meds and her school fees. Do not go by what is claimed blindly, use common sense, the internet can be dangerous. Before anyone thinks I am speaking about anyone specifically, I am not. As a mod, I can not give special treatment of the rules to granny or any. We probably have imposters on the forum, usually ones with a secondary motive than security, but every forum probably does. Just be careful.
