I'll upload photos tonight. The reed of the coin is bright white/silver, as is the obverse and reverse. And when using the tissue paper test, the coin is the same color/hue as my 40% 1971-1976 S Eisenhowers. Maybe it's just a copper clad one that was painted? Because I've seen the copper clad ones and the proof versions, and they always have the copper red on the reed.

Just wanted to get opinons on it before I take it to a coin shop for review.

Weigh it 40% 24.59 grams vs. 22.68 grams for clad

Ethan's photo is a test I performed as well seeing how I received a hand full of regular copper clad Eisenhowers as well. So this Saturday I'll take it in to be weighed.

Weight nay not be entirely conclusive but if it weighs more than 23.62 grams then you have a chance at 40% silver. If weight does seem to indicate a 40% silver composition then a specific gravity test needs to be done. SG should be around 9.5 compared to 8.9 for CuNi clad.

I'm aware of 40% silver 1974-D and 1977-D Ikes but not a 1976-D. But since the other two exist there is a chance.

"Ethan's photo is a test I performed as well seeing how I received a hand full of regular copper clad Eisenhowers as well. So this Saturday I'll take it in to be weighed." I'll be going to my local shop first thing tomorrow morning.

Well the shop owner said its most likely someone silverplated the coin. The weight was slightly heavier than the typical Eisenhower copper but not equal to the typical 40% Eisenhower. They suggest to use one of those laser machines that tell you the composition of it, but it won't tell you what's the % of metals. So I don't know. Another shop closer to my work has one of those machines.

In this case I would scratch the edge in between a reed with a small file or such. If you see copper then plated it is. Easy peasy!

Ah good idea. And I just did that. And I see bright copper pink proof-like finish after I scratched it on the reed. Oh well.

Funny how someone would silver plate it lol

Occam's razor... The simplest answer, or in this case method, is usually the best ;)

I would personally like to thank @alucard86 for not turning this into a "I'll show you!" thread and never coming back after finding out it wasn't a real 40% coin.

Honestly, thanks for coming back and giving us an update. The plated coins are constantly asked about out here an a whole lot of folks don't like to hear they don't have a one of a kind error.

Someone needs to take that razor away from Occam before he winds up damaging a real one one of these days. :)
