Although I had a Titus denarius I was plenty happy with, I parted with it to another member here and picked this up. I happened to like the portrait more on this and the reverse then my "sitting god" type on my last denarius. I also liked the toning on the reverse but that was minor in the want. Titus (79 - 81 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M•, laureate head right. R: TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P, facing empty throne of a deity (pulvinar) with a triangular back, back ornamented with uncertain objects and a cross at the peak, seat draped with a fringed cover. Rome Mint, 80 A.D. 3.34g 17.8mm RIC II, part 1, 124; RSC II 313a; BMCRE II 61; BnF III 50; SRCV I 2515
Very nice Mat. I like the toning on the reverse. I saw that coin on Forvm and almost bought it. I bought another Titus from Forvm instead.
Very nice addition, Mat (congrats) ... I find the obverse and reverse very appealing!! I only have my one AR Titus example ... Man, I love the "inside-out" lettering of these Titus/Vespasian examples (very cool)
They had a nice selection, almost got the left facing one. I liked it and despite being rarer, this one won out.
Seemed like a specialist set was cosigned, lot of 12 caesars with nice reverses/mints were being sold. Alot of great Othos, shame they want moon money.
@Mat I noticed that. There were at least 2 significant collections, one was from Jyrki Muona. There were 2 Gaius denarii that went up within 2 or three days of each other. I bought one just hours after it went up, and I believe the other was sold in less than a day. There were also 2 denarii of Claudius. One went in hours and the other was gone after 2 or 3 days. There are still several interesting coins there that I am considering.
Yup, they were really nice but out of my range. I would still like to upgrade Otho in the future and want a portrait Caesar, all in time. Thanks for the comments everyone!
Titus must have been a nice guy, in comparison to some folks around him at least, and his coins are often of great artistry. Nice catch Mat ! Q
Nicely toned and in nice style. This type of portrait was interchangeable with the Domitian as Caesar denarii struck at the time. Evidently the same engraver worked on both.
