Yesterday on the way home from work, I was listening to Dave Glover (on 97.1 Talk a local semi-conservitive station) and he does this triva type game, I think he calls it ""Battle of the Half Wits"... Anyway one of the Questions was phrased, what is a Numismatist??? He had a really hard time pronouncing it (never did get it right) and none of the players or people on the show even got close... I tried to call in and set'em straight, but couldn't get through in time... Dave eventually said, its a, uhh, a Coin Collector or something to do with coins... The rest of the guys were like ????? No offense to them, but I always find it funny to hear non-coin collectors talk about collecting...
To me, a numismatist is more than just a coin collector. A numismatist is someone who studies coins and money. They study monetary history, monetary designs, monetary varieties, etc. I find it very funny to introduce someone to the word "numismatist" for the first time. Noncollectors usually have a pretty difficult time with it.
thats funny, some day in the near future, we 'Numismatists' will be able to come out of the shadows for all the world( ie Non-Numismatists) to see
