Picked up nickels and pennies yesterday from bank #2 (don't have an account there, but they never asked). They had 3 nickel halves a couple of weeks ago (and that is extremely rare around here). Just on a whim, I asked the teller if he had any 50c coins (they get confused when you call it a half dollar), and he had one. Here's the kicker, it's a 2004! According to my 2007 Haxby, the mint only made them for sets in 2003 and 2004. Can anyone with a Charleton confirm this for me? If so, then that would be a great "buy" for just 50 cents!
In the mintage section of the Charlton catalogue for the 2004 50¢ it shows the designation N.I.I. I can't find any reference to that but I assume it means "not issued individually".It shows a star in the MS-63 and 64 columns which means "not issued in that finish".From this I would say you are correct about only being in sets. I can only speculate as to how it got into circulation. Bill
I'll try, but last time both the camera and the scanner didn't want to cooperate. Let's hope this time they're more friendly.
It would be cool to find out what price the 2004 50c. coin it is listed at in the 21st. Century Krause catalogue. Aidan.
Pictures from the camera came out like crap. (That's why the cameras are my wife's domain!) I'll try the scanner at work tomorrow.
Crappy pics from the multifunction scanner at work, but the best I can do for now. Enjoy: Obverse: Reverse:
I don't have the 21sst century Krause, and it's too new to be listed in my 32nd ed of the 1901-present. When I asked the teller what year it was, and he said 2004, I nearly climbed over the counter to grab it. I don't think that would have gone over well.
Topher, the current edition of the 21st. Century Krause has a red cover, but a new edition is coming out later this year. Aidan.
You can always buy the Krause & Pick catalogues here; www.amazon.com .It is best to bookmark it in your 'My Favourites' tag.You will be pleasantly surprised. Aidan.
Canada still produces the fifty cent piece and they can still be bought at the bank 2004 they were minted with and without the 'P' mark
Which is scarcer - 2004 P or 2004 no 'P'? Twiggs,I can guess that you do buy them from the bank & go through them to look for any coins to fill in those spaces in your collection, especially the later dates. Aidan.
I don't know what bank is getting them for you, but I'm having absolutely no luck whatsoever. My usual bank can't even special order them for me. (I asked) I was hoping to put together a set of nickel 50c coins before heading back into silver territory, but I'm stalled out at only 4 different years.
this will make you happy..from coin news After that, the mint started to produce them in rolls because collectors were miffed they weren't able to get them from the bank no 'P'
RBC? That's where I got this one. A couple of weeks ago, they only had 3 (all 1952-2002) so I took all of them as well. I guess I'll see if they can order some in just for me. Let's just hope they're not all the same year.
