Ellis Island is cool, the others shaky - basically don't like 'em. Particularly on the DC, I don't think there should be "two headed" coins - to me it doesn't look right on a coin. If there is a depiction of a person on the tails side, it should be small in the background of the design. The IA design is absolutely pathetic - did they pay a kindergartener to draw that?
According to the History Channel, part of Ellis Island belongs to New Jersey and part of it belongs to New York. Chris
I think the Ellis Island design will look good in coin and possibly the Indiana. But the rest will likely be too 'busy' to look differentiated in low relief nickel-copper. The above images work as shown because of the shading which gives depth to the devices/details, but once they are coined the devices/details will wash out in the uniform coin metal.
The designs are going to look miserable in the low relief that the mint specializes in these days. Some of the design details in the Blue Ridge Parkway quarter are lost in the actual coin. The Missouri and Iowa parks quarters are going to be flatliners when you see them.
Well being from Indiana, I'm a huge fan of the George Rogers Clark design! I hope to make it to the release at the park when that happens. Its currently scheduled for release in Nov. of 2017. Its 3 hours south of where I live tho..so I can see that being somewhat iffy...especially around Thanksgiving. As for the others, I like them all except Effigy Mounds, that just doesn't look like it will translate well to a coin. I've said from day one that the ATB designs are way more aesthetic than the statehood chaotic gobbledygook. Nothing against each state's specific designs but the ATBs at least have a common frame to the reverse that ties the series all together and I especially like the incused lettering around that frame.
Agree 1000%! Some of my ANA Convention medals, 1969-1982, were produced in high relief by MACO, and they are absolutely stunning. This is one of my favorites.
they are all lame, cept for Missouri, a scraggly lookin dude that needs a haircut and a shave, three angry dudes wavy their rifles around, a big building, this is what future generations are going to relate to as national parks?? an that last one? reminds me of those cheddar goldfish i snacked on last night, pretty lame depictions of national parks, either we need new people designing these or we need new national parks....
It will be interesting to see how the Philly Ellis Island quarters come out. It's a very busy design which will be prone to errors (hopefully) and I'm guessing these will appear at the windows like on the 2009P Lincoln Cent Illinois Capitol building. Unless there have been some changes to the quality control at Philly this could be a likely scenario. Got my fingers crossed.
True, even though the entire island is located in New Jersey waters. Same with the statue of liberty.
Exactly my point. Thanks for providing photographic representation. Ultra high relief is the only way these designs are going to work, but that is practically impossible for the Mint to do with coins for circulation. Oh well. I still like the circular frame device for the ATB/Comm quarters.
I have been reluctant to collect these quarters because the state quarters are so much more appealing to me, but I must admit, when this series is complete, I might desire this collection, because I think most of these designs are beautiful. I just don't like the low relief, or the frosty/grainy look.
