My son has gotten into coin collecting with me and really taken an interest. I decided a good way to get him familiar with looking for errors, varieties, etc. would be coin roll hunting. Obviously, this produces very little results, but it's a cheap way until a local show. Going through a $25.00 box of cents, this one caught my eye. I'm very familiar with the 1984 Doubled Ear Lincoln Cent with the doubled ear sitting at about 7 o clock from the original ear, but I have looked and looked and looked at this one, and it really appears to be a doubled ear sitting at 3 o clock. I've made sure it was raised and not damage, checked it against every other 1984 cent I can find which was about 50 in that box, and none look like this. So I'm hoping to hear from some experts here since everyone was so nice as to help me 3 years ago with my 1999 Georgia Double Denomination Quarter on a Struck 5C. So folks, what say you? Is it possible another doubled ear variety exists?

That's the one I'm absolutely familiar with. But this one.. I just can't stop looking at it. That 3 o clock just has me puzzled.

It could be a plating blister. These are very common on 1984's. They can be round, lines, or blobs. It looks like three of them around the lower ear.

I also go with a plating blister as your coin is loaded with them. Not enough distinction on the ear to be double from what I can see.

Well, I was hopeful I'd go home from work with good news for him. The only reason I looked at it very hard was the line going through the first lobe on the far right corner upwards in what looked like the possibility of the back of the second ear, which led down to the looks of a second lobe.

But, I'll keep searching! About 20 more rolls to go.
