I imagine just about every Roman emperor has been discussed more than once here, and I started a thread on Jovian one time when I got an AE3. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/jovian-roman-emperor-363-364.266747/#post-2203222 Someone commented in that thread they'd like one in silver (a siliqua) and I got one recently. It is from Nicomedia: SMN. In US coins various series have "key dates" (such as a 1914D for the Lincoln cent). A US coin can be worth a lot more because it is from a particular year, even if it is 99% the same as the others. Here is a coin of Jovian, and emperor who lasted less than a year, total: 27 June 363 – 17 February 364. This coin is something really different and not 99% the same. I think it is super cool that you can acquire coins of emperors who reigned about a year or less and they need not be expensive. A siliqua will cost a lot more, but an AE3 of Jovian can be had for $30 or less and $50 can get you an excellent example. I think this is the first and only siliqua of Jovian I've seen. And it's in wonderful condition. Congratulations. This is my favorite Jovian, but, alas it's not silver: JOVIAN AE3 OBVERSE: DN IOVIA-NVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: VOT V MVLT X in four lines across field within wreath; BSIRM Struck at Sirmium 363-4 AD 3.0g, 20mm RIC 118b
'Val', That's a wonderful example. Sometime in the future I'll probably get another to make my sole example of Honorius less lonely
Very nice indeed!!! What is the weight of that Siliqua? I have seen a few Jovians but they are by no means common or cheap Speaking of Siliqua Congrats Warren! A Siliqua a day keeps the barbarians away!
That is about right. After the reform of 354 they were supposed to weigh around 2.25g but they usually fall well below that standard. Thanks MZ! There a few more Siliqua that I will be adding to the hoard soon!
Nice Siliqua !! I found two issues at this siliqua, on official with mintmark SMN, the second, NotInRic with mintmark SMN• . RIC VIII 127, LRC 33Ae RIC VIII 127-V I've 4 in my collection : 2 from Arelate, 1 constantinopolis, one from Antioch.
