I've lost all faith in NGC

I submitted 7 coins to NGC a few weeks ago and just got my grades online. I did the online invoice form. The number 7 coin was a 1963 Washington Quarter which I mistakenly put down as MS instead of PF on the invoice. I caught the mistake and sent NGC a email telling them that. They said no problem. It will be taken care of at grading. A blind mind could see this was obviously a proof coin and should of (in my opinion at least gone cameo). Well it came back a MS66! You would think they would at least they would give it a * for superior eye appeal! I will post pictures when I get them back in a few days and you will see what a screw up this was.

sometimes people do make mistakes, i am sure that is what had to have happend. the person who you talked to said they would pass it on, they made a mistake - it happens. Email them again, since there is a paper trail about the coin, i am sure they will re-grade it for free....

A mistake is a mistake but when a top tier grading service gets a cameo proof quarter in hand and can't tell the difference between a business strike and a proof something is wrong. You would at least think I would get a * or Pl designation for it. I know it's hard to judge not seeing a picture of the coin. I will post when I get it. Not very happy. :headbang:

I remember that thread. Some great info there. If NGC graded this as a MS coin it should of least been givin a PL designation. I collect washington quarters from 1932-1998 and have a very high end set of them in a Intercept Shield album. This 1963 quarter I submitted you look at and go that is one nice cameo proof quarter. 1963 is a common date and I wouldn't just send in any quarter to grade. There is no way anyone could mistake this for a business strike especially a respected grading service. I gave them the heads up on the form I made a mistake and they still screwed it up.

 

I would keep it in the MS holder as an error slab.

Right on. I had an 1852 Gold $1 which came back in an NGC slab which said S$1 (silver dollar). Obviously no way a mistake by graders. Simple typo, no reason for excitement. Fixed for free. No probs.

 

Ah yes Doug, I remember that one. It's a classic. Flyers --will they regrade or reslab the lot for free or will it end up costing you twice to get them properly graded and slabbed?

 

Free. This isn't a regrading, just a fix of a typo. Different internal process.

 

That could be the problem. Wonder if they meant to have PF66 on it? Hate to think I sent the coin I thought would be a higher grade cameo proof quarter come back only Proof 66. Maybe the slab error with MS66 might not be so bad! :thumb:

 

If they made the mistake free. Sounding more and more like I will just keep it anyway. Should have it in a few days. I will post pictures to see what you all think. Thanks.

 

Added note: This is like the 3 error out of about 7 submissions I have had with NGC. The 2006 20th silver reverse proof from the 3 coin set. I submitted 5 of those and 4 came back with the correct special black 20th anniversary label and 1 came back in the regular brown label which was incorrect. No big deal there. Next i submitted a 2006 W Uncirculated (the burnished die coin). They labeled that coin just 2006 silver eagle without putting the W mint mark. I did send that one back to get it fixed.

 

7 submissions... how many total coins ?

 

69 total coins which includes 1 submission for a sealed box of 10 2006 20th annivesary silver 3 coin sets (30 coins total).

 

Got the coin back.
