I looked really hard at all the offerings and they look NT to my inexperienced eyes. Or is he just good? http://www.ebay.com/sch/numismamike/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
Some are AT, others are nicely toned (the Ike looks especially nice). However, most of them (both the AT and NT ones) are low grade MS or circulated so I wouldn't bother bidding on any of them (except of course, again, the Ike ). EDIT: By "nicely toned" I mean NT.
Although the Eisenhower Dollar looks unreasonable from what I've seen over the years, it's also quite possible from what I've seen over the years. Getting a good look at the reeded edge might offer some answers since if "heat" is applied, it will discolor that copper edge but if the coin is in a 2x2, it's possible that the edge could be left undisturbed. CnClad coins react differently in different environments. This 1971 turned blue in a Capital plastics holder along with the other coins in the collection. While it does not exhibit the target toning of the IKE that the seller has it does exhibit a bright gold area on the reverse which some of the CnClad coins do in fect develop. Given the fact that the rest of the sellers coins exhibit the same toning patterns, I'd would be a safe bet to assume that the coins have been messed with some way or another.
I'm tempted to say AT. The obverse colours are too banded, and the untoned reverse is a bit suspicious, although it may well just be to do with how it was stored.
Actually I'm not sure. The coin show I attended 2 weeks ago had a lot of rainbow toned graded newer issue ASE's (NGC/PCGS). Kinda makes you think...
Yeah, that's what I've learned from this forum. Still, his inventory is tiny. Perhaps he just seeks out toners?
I wouldn't buy any of his coins at all, they all look AT to me so either he gets them from someone else or he cooks them up himself. IMO sellers like that don't respect the hobby at all so I ignore them.
The coins are raw, they are all inexpensive for toned coins, and they all look the same. I'd say more than suspicious. Also, I don't find any of them particularly attractive.
Over priced coins that most often are found in the junk lots and played with to make money off the inexperienced is what I think we are looking at.
Of his 10 or so offerings, I didn't see any coins that screamed AT to me. That said, none of them really appealed to me either, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Yes it can be. But it is also possible for many coins from a single collection to all have very similar toning. When it comes to toning there are no rules. And even if you are very experienced with toned coins, just because you have never seen toning on a particular coin similar to what you are looking at, that does not mean it is AT. It just means it is unusual toning. Of course the opposite could be true as well. And that's the entire point - you never know for sure.
