Greetings fellow coin collectors, new member and nice to be here. I came across some older worldly coins that my Granddad left me. Some are really beautiful, but I did come across, what I think may be a 1944 10 yen. Since they did not use the numerical system, this makes it difficult to figure out the years. I've compared this coin (my profile) with other years, on ebay and other sites, but no one seems to have this year. I don't think it was considered a war coin, and probably the same value as the other years around it. Has anyone ever come across a 1944? I'd like to compare it with my coin, which is in pretty good shape.
No wonder I couldn't find it! It was making me nuts, and here I'm thinking I've struck it rich with a misprint or something special. Live and learn, actually it's a 1959 coin. Thanks a lot.

Yes, the Yen vanished for a while between 1914 - 1948. The 1948 Yen looked like this (they ran only 2 more years to 1950): Almost all of the WWII-era Japanese coins between 1940-1946 were made of brass, aluminum or tin. Most of the other metals went to their war effort. They remain cheap, fairly easy to find and pretty fascinating given their historical context.
