Hey everyone! Just picked this coin up...am I a happy camper? (genuine?) I now own ONE bust half... Looks like some doubling on the date, and a nice die crack on the reverse on the eagle's right wing. Gotta be a known variety, yes? Also, curious if this would be a high XF or an AU coin. (in your opinions) Thank you!
Only 1832 with such a large Die Crack Nice Toned AU 1832, O-101a, Large Letters, Capped Bust, Half Dollar Variety Attribution: Obverse-Cap extends over headband to curl. Stars medium in size and close to milling. Date is 8 mm. and rather low. The 1 shows recutting along right edge and the 8 in lower loop and right edge of upper loop. A fine vertical die line joins lips and chin. Reverse- Large Letters. Wide 50 C. is 2 1/2 mm.Arrow to A is 1/4 mm. A die break from tail feathers extends up and left along upper olive leaves, and is solidly joined to them and heavy, to outer edge of left wing, about halfway up from left tip. Another die crack is present from lower berry across leaves to UNI. Bold center dot between crossbars 4 and 5. The heavy break at left wing makes this large letter variety easy to identify. A rusted or unfinished die results in a larger portion of the surface being rough. Most noticeable are lumps inside of OF and between stem of lower leaves and the lower berry. The die break is heavier than the O-101, and solidly attached to the olive leaves and another die crack from lower berry across leaves to UNI.
If you're only going to have one Bustie, this is a heck of a nice choice. Well-struck (for a Bustie), lots of meat and appropriate color. Terrific type coin.
That's a beautiful example, AU50 at least, maybe 53, with a very nice strike as Rusty pointed out. If that is your first one, you have done well!
I agree. One of the shortcuts I always used to see equality of strike was the PLURI in the banner on the reverse. Yours is fully struck, which is not common. They usually struck up poorly due to being opposite of the major metal flow on the obverse. If the full motto is struck up, you are usually sure its a great strike.
