I'm not a collector and have a number of my mother's coins to sell. They are not terribly rare, but many are silver and some are uncirculated. My question is this: What is an apropriate "mark-down" for a dealer to take off of the retail price in the coin book? Is there some standard I can use to judge if this person is being fair with me?
By 'coin book' do you mean the Red Book? Red Book prices are high for the most part so I'd probably expect 40-60% of what they say depending on the rarity of the individual coins.
i would say AnemicOak is in the right ball-park as far as markdown would go. One thing that would be crucial IF you MUST sell, is to visit several dealers, and then choose the right one for you. Ebay could get you more for some of the coins, but its more of an effort then going to a dealer.
I think there are going to be many variables involved here: Condition/grade of the coins Rarity Number of coins Demand for the coins in question Maybe list the coins here and post some pictures if possible. These guys will be glad to give you an estimate if you give them enough information to base it on. Good Luck, Darryl
It depends on which dealer, and which coins. If they are BV coins, expect about 80% of value. If anything else, then 40%-70%
I think ebay would be your best bet, but it really depends on the types of coins that are in the collection. If you can post some pictures of the coins in the collection, some people on here could probably give you some good advice.
Right now ,you can expect 8.5 times face value for common date circulated silver coins. hope this helps. Good luck.
Go to several dealers. Remember dealers are dealers. You might be suprised what opinions many on this site have to offer in regards to your coins. I would like to see some pictures
I went to a local coin show 2 weeks ago in my area....had some old mercury dimes...no key dates....and circulated...they were offering 10 times face value, and 20x on a few barbers I had.
I agree that you should visit multipile dealers, and see what they are offering. Of the 2 dealers that I do business with regularly, one will buy your entire collection, and the other will pick and choose what he wants but gives more per coin.
