OK, since my original Tiberius Denarius was deemed to be a fake :)mad:), I have been on the hunt for another to replace it. I've been very patient searching through all the better known sellers and even bugging some of you. Well, I finally found one on Vcoins that was a bit over my budget; however, it arrived today and I guess I'm shell shocked. This one does not "exactly match any on the fake databases, but, it's close enough to some that it makes me concerned.

Does anyone have a problem with this coin? Do you think it matches any in the fake databases? Like I said, it just arrived today, and if there is doubt, I would like to return it immediately.

Please have a look and provide your opinions. If possible, I don't want another fake identified in later years.

Shame your other is fake but this one I am not a fan of either, soft details & some areas look bubbly.

I am far from an expert on these. I still stick with bronzes and Tets. of his....

Would it be possible for you to post pictures of (or links to) the known fakes that you think are close? This would be helpful in analyzing the possibility of a fake.

While I see nothing that makes this an obvious fake, these coins are so popular that they're a very tempting coin to counterfeit. Does the dealer from whom you purchased it have a perpetual guarantee of authenticity? If so, you can have it verified by an authority and if it's not genuine, your only cost is the amount to have it authenticated.

I bought it from a Vcoins dealer with the guarantee of all Vcoins. If I send it off to David Sear, there is a $50 charge plus shipping and I'm not willing to suck up that cost. I'd rather just return it if most of you think it's dubious.
To be truthful, I looked through Dr. Ilya Prokopov's Fake Ancient Coin Reports on Forum. There's about a page and a half of fakes posted there. None are exact, but some are too close for comfort.

For obvious reasons:rolleyes: I think I will withhold any opinion since I'm still not even certain about that Hannibal I just purchased, despite doing all the same things you just did.

For me, Martin has the deciding vote---if he says it's fake, then that's all I need to hear.

I hope you have the real deal.

Does the surface around the bottom of the bust have bubbles? Or is it spotty toning?

I looked through ForgeryNetwork and didn't see anything that appeared to be a match. The degree of wear on your coin obscures some of the features which would be helpful in comparing, but at least there wasn't an obvious match.

In your images, the focus is a bit soft so it's hard to say much about the surfaces. Do you have a strong magnifying glass and have you assessed the surfaces?

Also, what is the size and weight?

I think it's just a bad image. Looking through magnification the surface looks normal: no bubbles and really not much toning. I think it's been recently cleaned. It's terribly shiny and hard to photograph. Again, under magnification there are strike striations (right word?) visible. The obverse portrait stands out from the coin if that means anything, and there is no seam visible.

That's a better pic. The fabric looks good to me.

Strike striations sounds more hoity toity than flow lines. At the risk of annoying everyone in the thread, could you post really large images? Large enough so we can see the bacteria crawling on it?

Bing, I wonder if you have your camera just a little bit too close when taking the picture. If it is closer than the lens's minimal focal length, the image will not be sharp.

I have to make dinner just now, so I will see what I can do afterwards.

I'll have a cheeseburger, nothing fancy. Thanks. Oh, and some curly fries.

Too late. And I did fix cheeseburgers on the grill. No fries, but some potato salad. Alas, it's all gone. Next time tell me in advance, eh?

Man, my heart just SINKS when I see all the concerns on fakes. When one of my RR denarii was spotted as a fake here on CT, albeit a learning experience; it really dealt a blow. @Bing , man, I feel for you.

Hey don't condemn it quite yet. I just want to be sure. Still working on it.

    => awesome new addition!! (congrats)

... ummm, but huh? => why would you buy one that was so close to some of the fakes? (once bitten ... twice Bing?)

    ... I like you

I think it is authentic. My opinion doesn't mean much though :)

Given the number of fakes of this type and lack of a known fake match, it is going to be difficult for anyone to give a definitive opinion without seeing the coin in person.

Are you going to post it on Forvm as well?
