I'm in agreement with morgandude. I posted this thread for educational purposes I wouldn't advise buying a raw trade inless you really knew the series or were buying from a reputable dealer who guarantees their merchandise

1875 and 76 were transition years with both type 1 and 2. Obverses and reverses. Yours is a type 2. Easiest way to tell is the lack of a berry in the claw.

Thank you, Bill. I will post a photo tonight if I can figure out how (and get my daughter to help me the first time :bucktooth: ).

Thank you for that information. It was also pointed out, if I'm correct, that the hand with the olive branch had to show three fingers below the branch ? Is this correct ?

Wild Bill has collected Trade Dollars for so long that I doubt even the best Chinese fake would not fool him. :) However, dabbling in Raw Trade Dollars is expensive and risky--even I, as an experienced dollar collector am reluctant to buy any of them raw. The common dates, which is all that most collectors can afford are available slabbed within reason, and reliable dealers have plenty of them on hand. Why even think of going for a raw trade, when you, the consumer, is at a huge disadvantage from the beginning. I have seen people plunk down $300-400 and get fooled by decent fakes. If one is going to play in this higher stakes poker game, be sure to learn the series well--this isn't a Nickel/Dime series friendly game. :)

Here is a chart I made a few years back that shows the basic stuff for type 1 & 2 Trades

I've been searching for instructions on how to post a photo but haven't come across them. Would anyone kindly point me in the right direction? Thanks.

I think based on the details and overall details, this is an XF with some tarnish and signs of cleaning. How much did you buy it for? CC is rare among the mints!

Also, along with my first post, the trade dollars from CC are harder to find therefore, prone to counterfeits and replicas! Moreover, you should either do a detailed check or submit the coin to ICG, NGC or PCGS.

I don't know if you read some of the earlier posts. I did submit it and it came back au details cleaned just as I expected. Turned out to be a fairly rare die marriage too which I didn't realize but I knew from the beginning as trade dollars are something I specialize in

I would say the coin is real, but I won't be 100% sure. Probably 95% sure. Dentils look good. No pimping. The most convincing detail is the date. Very sharp and clean which I have never seen in a fake. XF details as other have said.

No coin is showing when you open the links. Can you just copy the image then upload it here?

No I don't think it is. The design is right type 1/1. But the denticles look wrong. The detail too soft. The surfaces are horrible and it looks like casting marks near the reverse mintmark. The images make it hard to see the fine detail I need. But it throws up major red flags
