Hi, this coin was in my grandpas shoebox since forever. Got excited when I figured out what a mint mark was and just got it back from PCGS, it is a no-grade VG Rim Damage. Question on the value. How much I could expect to sell this coin for at reasonable price, lets say to a coin dealer. Thanks in advance for your time ,
Very nice date. I am going on a limb and guessing it's worth around $1,500 give or take. I think you should hold onto it though since it was your grandpas. Awesome coin! I personally can't see the damage but I'm a newbie what do I know!
Thanks Amos & ksigsteve - I appreciate the quick replies! I don't have much experience and both of your information is valuable.
Check the average price for a VG coin here: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/7226/98?redir=t Rule of thumb: problem coins are worth about 50% of the price of a good coin But that's just a ballpark number, it could vary for key date coins. Also ensure to look at completed auctions for 1893-S Morgans in your grade...
+1 (can't believe I just did that, I hate to see others do it). To the OP, that is a valuable coin in more ways than one, even in worn out condition. I understand that sometimes things should be sold, if not for need, then for interest in something more valuable to you. Myself, I couldn't sell it because of from where it came, plus the fact that I can't think of something I had rather have in trade.
yup, im wrong once again...I could have sworn I recently saw a sold one in beat up condition for $40. This is all I could find now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1893-S-1-MO...466111?hash=item43e16782bf:g:F2sAAOSwPcVV1gVU
That is just an 1893 not an 1893 S. The s in that eBay post is in reference to the short silver dollar or S$1. So his post appears like 1893 S$1.
It is a mint mark "S", thanks guys - now I have a better understanding of how damaged coins are valued.
I looks like it was just encased. I guess they have to note the rim damage. If you're looking to sell it, I'd take my sweet time appraising it. It has good tone as well as eye-movement through it for VG. It could even go F if the obverse wasn't upside-down. No, really, it's hard to tell like that, but it looks close.
