Well, in the spirit of where this thread has gone ...and to help 'Al' celebrate the birth of his granddaughter, I'll offer the following: While in Thailand, I was offered a bowl of insects for a snack and a plate of rolled meat. The beetle-like insects I passed on, although the Thais consider them a delicacy by biting off the heads and sucking out the 'guts'----suppose to taste sweet and minty. I ate a few of the rolled meats and asked what it was. In broken English, my indigenous host said they were called 'monkey balls' My first thought was,' Oh my Gawd, I've eaten the Asian version of 'Rocky Mountain Oysters'....But later was relieved to find out it was just Water Buffalo meatballs. We had a monkey as a pet in our hootch, so I would have felt like a cannibal LOL
Pleeese, I just had my dinner!! Now you have me wondering.... because that cigarette they offered me certainly had a few unexpected effects as well
happy g-pa day ALEG! i think balut is one thing i couldn't do. i did have a dream last night a ate a little toad....
Congrats on the family-addition, Alegandalf ... Yah, I still remember eating a nice big bowl of rolled-oats as a kid (yummy, right?) ... but I was almost finished and my sister screamed and pointed at all of the wiggling bugs that had somehow gotten into the box!!? (I must admit that I didn't finish-up the last spoonful of weevil-mix) ... my parents had very bland-taste where food was concerned, so I didn't get to "experiment" and try things until I moved-out (now I'll pretty much eat anything and everything ... raw, hot, gross ... it all ends-up in the same place!!)
Had it in northern PRC and I did get very ill. I thought I was going to die & I was very afraid that I wouldn't die. I began carrying a more fully stocked medical bag with me after the experience.
Yep, one of those things my Filipino colleagues didn't think I would eat. Smells like a sewer, but I thought it tasted like mashed bananas. Not bad if you can get it past your nose.
