Hello All, Just received a bunch of Colophon bronze coins some have magistrates names I have to look them up, all not the best quality, just a fun lot some history about this place in Turkey: Colophon (/ˈkɒləfɒn/;[1]Ancient Greek: Κολοφών) was an ancient city in Ionia. Founded around the turn of the first millennium BC, it was likely one of the oldest of the twelve cities of the Ionian League. In ancient times it was located between Lebedos (120 stadia to the west) andEphesus (70 stadia to its south). Today the ruins of the city can be found south of the town Değirmendere Fev in the Menderes district ofIzmir Province, Turkey.
I like the bronze coinage of Kolophon very much. I particularly like the style of the horse and rider, and the lyres.
that will be a fun lot to ID! i think you have some BD there, may want to get some verdi-care if you don't already have some cyrrhus.
I think they are quite cool!!! But, since I have been accumulating a bunch of inexpensive Greek bronzes I may be a bit prejudiced
I'm not crazy about the condition of those coins, though. They're all quite rough, and a few have obvious problems with bronze disease. They need to be treated immediately if you want to save them. I realize that you like to collect large lots, which I completely understand, but these are too rough for my tastes. Most bronzes of Kolophon are not rare and are readily available without problems.
