Wow, some dope at the mint in Rome REALLY blew it! Where was the Quality Control? Where was the pride in their work? What the heck; how could a Mint Official let this GO??? There were supposed to be THREE Moneyers RESPONSIBLE for the proper mintage of the Res Publica argentum!!! I mean that this is a radical departure from conventional denarii with a januform dioscuri on the obverse instead the normal head of Roma... However, this denarius was SUPPOSED to commemorate the Roman victories over the Allobroges and Arverni in Gaul 121 BCE by Cn Domitius Ahenobarbus and Q. Fabius Maximus (Allobrogicus) Lucky them and LUCKY me, I was able to pull this FAULTY DOUBLE-STRUCK coin out of circulation so none of the Moneyers would be shamed! See what I got? Roman Republic AR Denarius - DOUBLE STRIKE M Furius L F Philus 119 BCE 19.5mm, 3.9g OBV: M FOVRI L F, laurael head of Janus REV: Roma standing l, crowning trophy with carnyx and shield on each side, star above Roma, ROMA to r, PHILI (PHI) in monogram in ex. Crawford 281/1; Sear 156... But, NO! They don't list THIS double-strike aberration! My Quality Control Engineers spent a lot of time reviewing the mistake and did some detailed comparisons to prove out this anomaly... This is what should be more of the standard: Roman Republic AR Denarius - hmmm...more normal... M Furius L F Philus 119 BCE 17.2mm, 3.4g OBV: M FOVRI L F, laurael head of Janus REV: Roma standing l, crowning trophy with carnyx and shield on each side, star above Roma, ROMA to r, PHILI (PHI) in monogram in ex.
Folks, this is an AWESOME piece! I snapped at it when I saw it! I have been very lucky snagging a WHOLE bunch of great coins in the last month! Been fun. OH! Me RUDE! Please post any cool mistake ancient coins...
I love error threads. Unfortunately I'm at work, so I'll chime in with some of my favorites later tonight.
very cool coin! sorry but my only double struck is from a few centuries later..... edit: oops my goof up, meant "millennium" not centuries...
OMG!!! LOL, I must have goofed up! Must be from Aethelrickard the Zero, Lost Byzantine Emperor from Jan 2-3, 1122 AD...
You know, when you think about modern-era machines mindlessly making mistakes, you can kinda understand QC problems. But to hand-strike an error... LOL, someone was REALLY asleep at the wheel! Some mindless worker tired, or goofng around... "OH CRAP!" and "Oh well, who cares...ain't MY money!!!" Then, he quickly tosses it into the pile...
Yes, exactly that. But it's actually surprising how FEW ancient coins have errors, given the inexact nature of the minting process.
HEY! This little COIN just fell out of the daughter-baby-machine today at 3:22 PM CST, my 4th GrandChild... Penelope Sue
