    ...and I have to say...

I'm happy, but I'm curious. In fact, I'm going to go on a mini-rant here.

How do NINETY-TWO coins get graded without a single STAR grade? You guys have seen some of the raw nickels I've posted. I got a TON of FS nickels...48 to be exact...and not ONE of them had attractive enough eye appeal to get a star? Does NGC not give out stars any more?

    Anyone else had this happen?

    You're kidding right?

    No pictures?

Now I'm really upset. I opened this thread expecting you to show off some killer Jeffies, and NADA.

To make it even worse, you talked about how awesome some of them are, and STILL didnt show us.

Give us something, man, come on!

Post one you thought was deserving of a star.

Well, if they're that nice, they make the next grade instead of a Star. :)

I'd love to show you some photos - but they literally JUST posted the results today, so they'll be shipped either today or tomorrow.

The other problem with posting pictures of the slabs (because they will show up in the cert verification) is that I'd like to do some GTG when they get back (will give everyone LOTS of practice on Jefferson Nickels, right?) and posting even ONE cert will let the crafty ones of us figure out every other coin on that invoice.

Another problem is that I don't know which coins didn't grade. I won't know that until I get those back.

For now...I'll say that the "best" coin (in terms of retail value) in the group that graded was a 1944 P MS67 5FS ($4,200 in the guide.)

This will now present a dilemma...do I keep for my own collection, or do I want to drive my dream car (1970-72 El Camino) from now on? That one coin is a running (not anything special) version of my dream car.

You guys have MY WORD that I will get some sweet photos as soon as they all come back.

Another thing - I sent in (at the same time) a group of my Type B Washington Quarters. Want to know which ones came back ungraded? Anything with toning on it. So it makes me wonder.

Photo are the key for your answers.(* FS etc)

NGC doesn't like toning, I cracked one out and sent it to ANACS to see what would happen

If you got a 65 FS and are not happy with the grade, send it back and ask them to change it to 64 * FS. I'm sure they'll accommodate you.

NGC likes toning just fine. Of the 10 coins in my last submission, 5 were toners, and all 5 graded. Cert numbers 3706436-005 through 3706436-009. The photos on NGC are not very representative, but better images of these coins can be found on eBay.

Here are two 1963 Type B Quarters that were sent back ungraded (as an example of what I'm talking about):

Maybe the lack of stars means better straight grades and no worthless plusses. I would rather have the 44 in 67FS than 66*.

True. Overall, I'm very happy with the results...but I do wonder why, with over 90 high grade coins, not one star was given.

    (I think I'm being greedy - I want some more MS67*FS coins) :)

IMO, I like the fact NGC is stingy with the "*". It makes it that much more "valuable". That being said, I don't like every "*" coin I've seen, but I do like the majority of them.

Congrats on your 1944 MS67 5FS! You have a tough decision regarding this coin vs. El Camino (one of my fav vehicles from that era). I'd only sell it if you could find another very close in quality and eye appeal. Otherwise, I'd keep it in my collection.

I think the 1963's were a CYA move on the TPG's part. These days they'll fail a coin for color if there's even a breath of doubt. The ridiculous prices being paid for toners have hurt the TPG's too - there's too much money at stake to risk surface authenticity claims from subsequent owners so they've adopted a very conservative criteria for toners. I bet they can see those are original toners as easily as you and I can, but the colors are just enough to give them pause.

Maybe they got burned on a claim recently. A talented ATer can hide some pretty drastic surface disruption.

Since I've posted something in the WTS section anyway, here are the top 6 coins I will get back (dollar value, anyway, not grade):

    *1939 P (Rev of 1940) Jefferson Nickel NGC MS67 5FS
    *1944 P Jefferson Nickel NGC MS67 5FS
    *1944 S Jefferson Nickel NGC MS67 5FS
    *1948 D Jefferson Nickel NGC MS67 5FS
    *1949 S Jefferson Nickel NGC MS66 5FS
    *1978 P Jefferson Nickel NGC MS66 5FS

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

You don't have to post the slabs, just show us the coins! I'm really curious to see the coins you thought deserved stars, but which didn't get them.

As for the 63 quarters you posted which didn't get grades... the color on those looks suspicious.
