Hey everyone! Had a question regarding this coin. Not so much the doubling, but around the date there is, what appears to be, blistering kind of like what we see on more recent cents. Would this just be contamination with the planchets that were used? Thanks!!
If you are comparing the blisters to the more current Plating Blisters found on the Copper Plated Zinc Cents then no. It's 2 different things going on. IMO Your 1957 is just a deteriorated die that just caused that mess of doubling and blister like features.
Hey, you found a good one! That is a nice, clear DDO. That is the CONECA DDO-001, Stage C. Take a look here, and compare yours: http://varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/lincoln doubled dies 1956-1958.htm#_1957-D The pitting you see is a product of a rusted die, not the planchet. It is a cool effect, and not often seen on mid-20th century coins. Rusted dies are far more common on 19th century coins.
