    Team,

Here is a better close-up of the 1883 IHC which I picked up earlier today. After getting it out of the flip and taking a better look you can see it's far from my earlier grade of AU-50. More in the VF/XF category. Still a decent buy for $5.00. What do you say...???

    Thanks for looking

I would say that it is XF-40, but I would be concerned about the verdigris on the reverse. Still, not bad for $5.00.

I don't know how to grade these coins so to me it looks AU, but I have a question. Doesn't it look like its been cleaned? There is definetely green around the letters.

That was my first thought, as well.

    VF-30

The green I don't think is from cleaning.

I would say VF-30 as well. There is some wear evident on "Liberty" and more wear on the ribbon where the diamonds are barely visable. Still a beautiful piece for only five bucks.

The green is PVC damage. Nice buy for $5, but could use a soak in acetone to get rid of the verigris IMO.

XF - 40 details - $5 is a fair price for it. If you don't neutralize the green monster soon, it will eat up your coin Bone.

More in the VF/XF category. Still a decent buy for $5.00.
    Agreed on both counts.

XF (just about) and still very nice.

Agreed: Soak it, and soon before it grows any more.

The green may be PVC damage, but it is much more likely this is simply corrosion. Copper frequently corrodes this green color and the areas where it is occuring lead me to believe it is corrosion rather than PVC (which is often spotchy and not lmited to the protected areas as this coin is).

That said, the coin looks to me to have been cleaned and the corrosion was much more visbile prior to the cleaning. If I owned the coin, I would try and soak it in acetone, then if that doesn't work in olive oil for a day or two, thoroughly rinsing it in distilled water afterwards. I doubt either will have much of an effect.

    Take care...Mike

p.s. I grade the coin VF/XF details, corroded and cleaned, net VG. It does have a lot of deail and is still a good album coin. $5 is not too bad, all things considered, but I would have passed on it.

Oh that's OKay everyone. It appears to have just been grime. It cleaned up with a good soaking in vin... (LOL) no just regular H2O2. And, I wrote XF-40 on the flip. :D

i would say xf-40 and can we see a couple after pics now that you cleaned it with (I think you meant h2o for water right and not a complex ho for hydrogen peroxide right)

Nope, Plop Plop Fizz, Fizz, Hydrogen Peroxide for about five minutes. Dried it off on a cotton towel. Unfortunately I've locked it up in the safe and don't feel like going back downstairs and unlocking it for pictures. Maybe tomorrow. :)

I tried hydrogen peroxide once just to see what it would do (on a worthless Lincoln). It would have been just slightly faster if I had used vinegar and that is just what it looked like.

All this did was remove some of the dirt. No discoloration what-so-ever. I've never used acetone, but would suspect it's a substance which performs like the H2O2.
