No silver president dollars, nor any silver spouse coins. The first spouse coins will have bronze medal copies though that should be avaialble about the same time the gold ones will be.
Well Frank... for me since I collect american Eagles..they left out the entire 2006 listing for Silver, Gold and Platinum...they have the 2006 W Proofs and Burnished die "W" coins but not the uncirc 2006 coins!! What an oversight!!! RickieB
I doubt it was an oversight, it is normal for the Red Book to not have mintage numbers for coins until 2 years later. And since they have started releasing the books earlier in the year, that will likely become 3 years in some cases.
haste makes waste! i guess they were still shell shocked over the mistake with the silver proof prezzie 'jumpin' the gun' entry.
I collect the Red Book and have all editions from 8 to present. All look like new because I always buy one for my library and one for use. However, the amount of errors in the last few years have grown fantastically. With the 2006 Edition I got mad and went through that book purposely looking for errors. I found enough to write a long, long leter to dennis.tucker@whitmanbooks.com We ended up with several email type messages going back and forth and he thanked me for the list and even sent a free book on the Morgan Dollars. Then I noticed the 2007 edition coming out excessively early and wondered if the reason was due to all the errors in the 2006 version. NOPE, even more in that one. Gave up figuring it may take a few editions to fix it all. Now with the 2008 Edition I noticed most of my previous findings were not corrected and many, many more. So I started another list of errors which is now close to severa hand written pages long. I'll add the ones from this post to my list. Eventually I'll send this list to dennis tucker again. By the way for anyone reading this, Mr. Dennis Tucker of Whitman Publishing monitors most of these coin forums. I think I've seen him answer some items on a forum somewhere. That is where I first found his name. Again if you want to complain to Whitman about any of thier products send an email to dennis.tucker@whitmanbooks.com Or cal at 404-235-5348 or FAX at 404-214-4390 or send a letter to Dennis Tucker, Publisher Whitman Publishing, LLC 3101 Clairmont Road, Suite C Atlanta, GA. 30329
Was surprised to find the 2008 edition in my library today. The last coin book I bought (back in '69) was the 1970 Whitman "Buying and Selling US coins". I quite enjoy that one. The prices are slightly off, but relative rarity is still valid. Seriously, the 2008 Red Book is cool. I'm not sure I need to own the latest and greatest version - might look for one that's a couple years old for the historic and general information it contains - which is valuable.
It's amazing how many mistakes are made in a book published annually with 90% of the same information repeated each year except for prices. Are there any "better" if less popular guide books out there?
There are numerous books being published on coins and there are numerous coin web sites. The Red Book is just about the oldest around though and yes you would think that such a book would be almost error free by now. And if you check out the Whitman web site you would notice they now produce a multitude of coin books and related items. Occationally the Red Book goes through slaight transformations in layout, design, types, etc which must be effecting the quality of information somehow. With so many variations such as soft cover, soft cover ringed, hard cover, special covers, etc. it appears that Whitman is more interested in quantity rather than quality. Books that are produced with a 2008 date and come out a few months into 2007 must have something going on rather than quality.
Just one more thing. If you have purchased the 2008 Red Book, check out the add for Whitman after page 400. In the soft cover version there is an add for a free $2.99 cent folder from whitman for the new dollar coins. In SOME of the hard cover versions there is an add for a free copy of "The Expert's Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins". It is a 700 page book of advice from Q.David Bowers. AGAIN , it is in some versions but not all. This was noted on another coin forum and someone called Whitman and they said it is true that the add is different in different books of the same type. Check out your hard cover versions for the add.
