Hey, I am having to stay home and watch the kids (dogs) this weekend while my sweet wife and bro-in-law have driven-down to the big city where they'll enjoy a big ol' Canadian Thanksgiving turkey-dinner with the rest of her family!! Ummm okay, you caught me => I'm gonna love the bachelor long-weekend alone with the hounds!! (hmmmmm, what should I do next? ... nothing? ... what a great idea!!) Sure, maybe that's not the spirit? (hey, I'm heading-down at X-mas to spread stevex6 lovin' during the holidays, so I'll try twice as hard and maybe I'll even wear a Santa-suit!!) ... anyway ... Question: What are the chances of me accidentally buying a coin while she's away? (anybody?) Answer: What is 100%? ......... correct!! A couple of years ago, I went-off on a tangent and started a side-collection of coins from Rhodes (maybe a couple of you dudes remember that time period?) => regardless, I bought another addition to my cool subset-collection ... wanna see? ISLANDS OFF CARIA, RHODES, Æ35 DRACHM Circa 31 BC-60 AD Diameter: 35 mm Weight: 21.87 grams Obverse: Radiate head of young Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath Reberse: Nike standing right on prow, holding aplustre and wreath Reference: Ashton, 'Rhodian coinage in the imperial period,' Recent Turkish Coin Hoards and Numismatic Studies, 110-112. N. Other: R. S. Collection => oh my ... it's a big baby, eh? Wow, this would be the coolest golf-ball-marker "ever"
BIG, fat, and phat! that's a cool coin, you don't often see greek AE that big that aren't from one of the ptolemy crew. nice color also! have a fun weekend with the kids, be sure to clean up before mom gets home!
Oh frick, where are my manners?!! => "please" post any coins from Rhodes .... ummm, or any coins with Dionysos on 'em ... Ummm errr, Nike is a bit easy, but yah okay => post any cool Nike coins as well => Just Do It!! ... I'm gonna, so you might as well try to beat me to the ol' punch!! I like you guys => Oh, and I hope that you all have a Happy Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend!! (yes, that is why I'm flying my sweet festive avatar) Cheers, my coin-friends!!
thanks man yah ... I am excited about this one (hey, I love my cool small Greeks, but wow => it is sooooo sweet to score one of these big babies!!)
Well ummm, I'm gonna start to toss-in an example or two ... ooh, before the pizza delivery arrives!! => the dogs are totally pumped for the good ol' meat-lovers wheel!!!
My absolute "FAVOURITE" coin!! ... I've had it forever and I've never seen another example (David Sear and Doug both seem to like it, so I'm also on-board with this sweet lil' darling!!) Rhodes Rose, AR Hemidrachm 408-394 BC Head of Helios & Rose (incuse square) Okay sure, it's a tad creepy with the odd Helios face ... and even the rose is a bit huh, but ... ... man, I love you, my awesome lil' sweetie!! It's my oldest and coolest Rhodes example => cha fricken ching!!
I wasn't even aware of the type - very cool! The reverse looks over-cleaned, but sometimes coins are so crusty you really don't have a choice. But even that gives it eye-appeal since it gives you an idea of the original color.
Part of the beauty of this big baby is the fact that I stole it for $225 Canadian (ummm, that's kinda like 50-cents to you US-characters!!) ... well, $174 actually .... Oh, and I've seen a bunch of these go for quite a bit more ... originally, the dude was asking $325, so again, I was happy when the checkered-flag finally waved!! https://cngcoins.com/Search.aspx?IS_ADVANCED=1&ITEM_IS_SOLD=1&ITEM_INVENTORY_NUMBER=&CONTAINER_NAME=&ITEM_LOT_NUMBER=&ITEM_DESC=islands off caria rhodes ae drachm&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_1=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_3=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_2=1&VIEW_TYPE=0 *whatev* => every now and then it's all about the bid-bid-bid!!! (I liked it, so I snagged it!!)
Islands off Caria, Rhodes Nikophon Magistrate, AR Drachm 84 -30 BC Helios & Rose Top View ... seriously? Yup wow, that's one sweet lookin' coin, eh? => ya gotta love dem 3/4 facing babies!!
You've definitely cornered the Rhodes market around here. I don't think anyone else on CT has as many different types.
I know you seen the commercial the most interesting man in the world. Well Stevex6 you got to run a very close Canadian second! Without a shadow of a doubt you're amazing ..... there ya go" amazing Steve........" That's Hollywood ....... a *...... U R! Paddy
That seems almost certain. They are all fantastic examples and range from small to huge and ALL have wonderful eye appeal---and to think I can't seem to win one at bid. That R.N.M drachm is simply GORGEOUS!! Congrats Steve !!
