When I first read this I thought, I nearly have that myself. Then I noticed you didn't say type collection. Wow.
I just wished I had paid attention to the collection before. Personally I believe I have a 20th century type set of Mexican short just a couple of one year copper coins. I have all of the silver and gold I am sure as a type. One thing I did appreciate was his complete collection of 50 pesos. Those are simply jaw dropping. I have always loved that coin.
I love the cap and rays series - I'm not completely sure why; just something about the circular symmetry of the design. And who can resist a liberty cap? I mean really... Years ago I purchased a high grade 1923 Un Peso from a dealer who is sadly no longer with us. I think it cost me $20 - $30 at the time and when he took it out of the case he stared at it for a bit and then said "it's always interesting to compare Mexican and US coin prices. The equivalent US coin of this era would probably cost $3,000." He didn't exactly say which equivalent, but he's generally right about the price spread between Mexican and US, especially in very high grades. As such, I wouldn't mind putting a decent grade cap and rays set together because it's at least feasible. I do have an old Maximilian peso, but it's unfortunately holed. Otherwise it would have been completely unaffordable. Going back even a few years from the 20th century the Mexican coins start to get really pricey really quickly. They're all underrated in my opinion, especially the "Cabalito" peso. I'll get to them all someday.
Of the Cabillitos? Yeah, I think I have 2 or 3. I am always a sucker for them. Another spectacular design every bit as great as any US coins.
Lol, we have just been buying and collecting a long time. Thinking back, I believe I bought one from John Ferm locally, and another from Frank Robinson. There could be a third I do not remember. I have about 4,000-8,000 ancient coins, depending on what you count, and maybe 50 pounds of "better" world coins, which I would put the cabillitos, 50 pesos, and other Mexican coins in. One day you will be here too. Time + coin collecting = Massive quantities of coins, at least in my case. Here is a bad pic of one of my 50 pesos.
I have a complete set but I don't have pictures. I don't collect varieties though so I just have one of each year.
Well, you being a true Mexican coin geek I would expect you do. I need to see if Roscoe is still alive. I would love to introduce the two of you to each other.
I actually just started working on this part of the set this year because silver got cheaper. These still sell for several dollars above melt most of the time, however, at least on eBay. It's one of the examples where you can probably get a better value at a dealer because the real value exceeds the book value.

The nice thing about this series is compared to many of the other Mexican series, there are no seriously high valued coins in this one, so they're all attainable. I probably paid the most for the 1918 I think and it was maybe $30.
