I am totally confused. I thought that I had read that there would be no Sacagawea Dollars issued in 2007 due to the issuance of the Presidential Dollars. I was evidently misled as the US Mint has 2007 Sacs for sale. I can't recall where I read that the Sacs would be discontinued.
Yep the Sacs will continue. It was mandated that at least 1/3 of all dollar coins minted must be Sacs...
I think they may have a changing reverse on the Sacagawea in the future so it looks like they plan to continue the series if what I read was correct.
Yes, law states that one-third each year must be Sacagaweas. Why? Politics. Bill wouldn't have been passed without that provision. Ah yes, politics. That's why we continue to have Sacagaweas, the new Presidential series, and the one dollar bill. Politics reigns, not common sense.
The Mint has not yet began making 2007 Sacs - once this year's 4 Prez. dollars have all been made, then production will start on Sacs.
You guys say that politics is behind the 07 Sac. dollars being made, and I don't doubt that, but what was the deal? How did politics play into it? Who made out? Thanks. davdo.
One of the senators from North Dakota wanted to make sure that Sacagaweas weren't discontinued and made a big stink about it, so they amended the presidential dollar legislation so that 1/3 of all dollar coins must be Sacagaweas. The politics of such things comes into play when congressmen want to make sure well known figures from their state get honored and stay honored for the sake of looking good to their constituents. (Sacagawea is widely believed to have been born and spent a great deal of her life in what's now North Dakota.) Same reason they still mint Kennedy halves, despite them being little used in circulation for their entire run. There's little political advantage to be gained for fighting congressmen's pet projects; it usually pays to support others' projects so that they'll support yours, so there's little motivation to fight minor things of ths nature which few constituents oppose. Senators especially stake their re-election chances on how many goodies they can get for their state out of the federal pinata. Whatever you think about it, that's the modern political reality, lol... As to who benefits, besides the miners of the metals the coin is made out of, anyone who wants to feel good about Sacagawea being honored (on a coin that is almost never used) I suppose, which in one ND senator's mind, was his constituents. Coin legislation often has a lot of "feel good" qualities to it, where practicalities tend to take a backseat to the need to make their constituents feel good about what is being passed.
Davdo, This is political correctness run amok, also notice the name is now "Sakakawea" as not to offend any indigenous peoples (American with indian heritage) I found this in the Congressional record: Placement of statue of Sakagawea in U.S. Capitol, S3847 [19AP] A concurrent resolution designating Sakakawea to be honored and memorialized with a statue in the National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Whereas, Sakakawea was a traveler and guide, a translator, a diplomat, and a wife and mother; and Whereas, Sakakawea was an Indian woman guide for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and Sakakawea's indomitable spirit was a deciding factor in the success of Lewis and Clark's two-year expedition to the northwest quadrant of the United States; and Whereas, William Clark wrote in 1806 that Sakakawea deserved a greater reward for her attention and services on the expedition that he had in his power to give her; and Whereas, Sakakawea is a legend of truly historic dimensions who lived in what would later become North Dakota and who made a lasting contribution through her courage and resourcefulness; and. Whereas, Sakakawea's traits--strength, courage, a generous heart, and pioneering spirit--have been an essential part of the character found in North Dakotans, thereby representing the best of who we are and why we will always persevere; now, therefore, be it Geez, I think that Lewis and Clark need not apply out old girl SAK could have done the journey on her own according to the statue legislation. So her coin is here to stay.
I remember reading that the spelling of her name was in question but that was an argument between using a G or a J.
You will not see '07 Sac's at the bank. 2000's were the only ones released in to circulation. From '01 onward, Sac's were minted and placed in a vault, except for the ones released for mint sets and collectors. The only Sac's in circulation are 2000's.
Anyone see an 01 Sac or 02 Sac or 03 Sac or 04 Sac or 05 Sac or 06 Sac at the bank??? I think I only ever got (get) 2000 ...
I was able to obtain 2000 P & D and 2001 P & D from my bank. I only had enough money on me to buy two rolls at the time and I found the "complete circulation" strikes, along with enough SBAs to represent each year/mintmark.
I already have my Sac coin albums updated with the 2007-P and 2007-D Sacs. I have three books and obtained the 2007's well over a month ago.
Not sure what you base that statement on, but I do believe it is incorrect as I have seen 2001 Sackys in circulation many times. And as der_meister77 said, I too was able to obtain 2001 coins from the bank.
