In the case of the 1984 cent, I can picture the ear being the high point of the hub. A slight tap would leave an impression on the die.
Doubled letters, numbers, other features are bigger than normal features because they are doubled. If there is a feature with a line through it it does not make it doubled. doubling "doubles" the width or height or something to make the features larger than a normal coin. This 1984D Doubled die. Listed as Coneca die #1, and Wexler's die number two shows doubling on the date, and the bottom of the bust. Extra thickness and distortion on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY. Notice how all of these features are larger than the "normal one". The normal one is the bottom image. Look at IN GOD WE TRUST. See how the normal coin's letters are normal looking? Now the top image look at GOD and compare them. This coin does not have extreme doubling but it is a sought after DDO. Here is a link to some better pics of the coin. http://www.varietyvista.com/1984DDDO002 cent.htm After the die for the lower coin gets old and worn it will make weird looking letters like your nickel. But it won't have the features of a doubled die. The dot in the top of the second to the East in the Memorial has a dot. That dot is a "marker" for the die. I absolutely have given up, I spent the nickels and have been extensively. Reading about the process hints I haven't had any new post,
doubledies.com read all of that man,The knowledge you will gain from reading that website alone will tremendously improve your understand of how the coins are made and the doubling that occurs.
The coins are gone already but I must reply and say that the phenomenon was on every letter, and in date and on all letters on in God we trust, I just couldn't get the picture to show it, well on to the next, I have learned allot from this single mistake so it was worth it thanx everyone
