I picked this up on Ebay and I don't know but I think it's VAM-18. What do you guys think? Does that make it more valuable? With my luck it's fake.
VAM 18 is more valuable than a more run-of-the-mill 1878-CC. Maybe a 1.5-2x premium in AU55-MS63. Heritage sold an NGC AU55 for $300 back in February. A PCGS AU55 would have probably sold for $325. Not sure what or if your coin would grade from the pictures.
Still can't tell if it will grade from the picture. You either have a 62PL, an AU58, or a no-grade thanks to hairlines I can see in the left obverse field. Since you are lighting the coin with a single, small light from 1:00, the hairlines might just be the only ones the light is making visible. The other thing that gives me pause is what looks like some residue on the lower reverse. I'd hit the coin with acetone to see if it comes off, although I'm not optimistic based on the earlier close-up picture.
Do you think the coin has been cleaned? Will it grade? What would the residue be? Forgive the awful pictures, I've never photographed coins. It seems like there's an art to it. In person it looks like bag marks, but I do see some hairlines. The genius who sold it just wrapped it in bubble wrap with no flip so I wonder if that did anything. I took the close up pics just holding a loupe up to my iPhone, so those are real close up. Here's some more awful pictures:
Well the good news is it didn't come back cleaned! PCGS order just updated with a grade of MS61PL (it's always one grade lower than I think it will be). Pop of 2/3! I paid 350 for it! Edit: Also VAM 18
Well I was gonna say : it's been cleaned at some point, without a doubt. I'm guessing that it looks better in hand and/or its Market acceptable
Yeah, I had a couple of other coins come back cleaned and I can't tell how that could be the case. I still don't know what the criteria is for a cleaned coin. I'll take it though. I'm pretty psyched, because it's so rare in this grade. I thought others would be interested in the rarity, but apparently the main concern is if it was cleaned or not, even after it came back with a grade. Oh well.
Nice pick! Snagging a top 100 raw off ebay and having it come back 61PL from PCGS is a win. Congrats!
I finally found one for sale and it's remarkable how similar this coin looks to mine: http://www.ebay.com/itm/191714730903?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
