What is this sort of damage called? Would it be machine damaged? I have found three of them over the last few days. Thank you
It looks like a "MAD" or mis-aligned die. In 1972 there was the stationary die or anvil die and the hammer die which was moveable. After enough striking and vibration the two dies get slightly out of alignment. People do collect them but they are not that valuable.
This is so common with this year I don't save them but I do have 1 just because. I also have the DD for this year but that's really noticeable.
