This coin arrived today so I took a pic and combined it with my only other two Ptolemies. I need to fill in the denominations, right? Right.
WOW, WAY cool to see them together like that! Would love to drop my AR Tet Ptolemy I in there to see how it fits... LOL, Try to carry all THAT change around in your pocket everyday!!!
My other Ptolemy (apart from the 42mm) is a baby Ptolemy (don't know which one) Coin: Bronze None - Zeus right - Two eagles facing left cornucopia before Wt./Size/Axis: 6.61g / 18mm / -
That coin has great detail for a small denomination, but is it stable? Some of the green looks like mineral deposits, some BD. I'm a little suspicious of my new coin as well - it's got a few small areas of brighter green. I'm going to keep a very close eye on it in case it needs any treatment. My smallest ae has a little green dot on the obverse, but it hasn't done anything in years, so I'm assuming it's stable.
Here is one I just picked up that should be coming in tomorrow or Wednesday: Ptolemy III Euergetes(?) 246-221 BC, AE22. Head of Ptolemy I right / Head of Libya right, "ΠΤΟΛΣΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΣΩΣ". Kyrene, Libya, Mint. Svoronos 871 Regnal attributions are a bit weird and debated on these so some references list different issuing rulers.
A new addition, my smallest of Ptolemy III so far, 15mm. The pic isn't great - I like to photograph coins in sunlight, and we just don't have any today. This coin has great provenance, ex-J. P. Righetti, ex-CNG, ex-red_spork. Thank you friend! Attributed to Kaunos mint. The smallest denominations are tough in this nice of a grade. I'll take a better pic next week when the clouds part.
@John Anthony " I'll take a better pic next week when the clouds part. No sunshine for you! We still have a lot of rain, and a lot more coming for the next several days
This was a hard coin to photograph for me as well. Here is the best one I was ever able to take of it: And here is his little brother that I ended up keeping:
I don't own a single Ptolemy coin but plan on it in the future. It's low priority for me at the moment though. They seem to be expensive the higher grade they are. I haven't seen too many decent ones under $50 USD.
Gil, probably the best chance to grab a decent one in that price range is Forum Auctions...either from Forum or the other private sellers.
Glad you brought this thread back John, because I have two to share once I reboot them. Hmm...I might do that tonight. @Gil-galad you can find some decent ones in that price but you'll have to be diligent and persistent in your search. I got a cool 17mm-ish for a little over $43...I can't remember off the top of my head.
