How you going to do it? This is a 4,000 year old civilization which was far larger than ours 3 millenia ago. America does not "intimidate" China and never will. There is a certain - for lack of a better term - arrogance to the Chinese government which really keeps them from caring a whole lot what we think. If it's convenient to them, they'll halt the practice. Don't forget, numismatic counterfeiting is a bare drop in the lake of Chinese production of fakes. We're all up in arms, while the Chinese counterfeiters probably sell more street value worth of Rolexes alone than all counterfeit coins combined. By comparison we're a tempest in a teapot, and the Chinese don't care about that either.
Beware of the false appeal of quick fixes. The bottom line is "The Donald" doesn't know what he's dealing with in China. Do you know what happens when McDonald's, e.g., pulls out of there? Their restaurants there don't skip a beat, and they're still "McDonald's Corporation." Now what do we do, prosecute them for identity theft? We can't even prosecute them for their counterfeit Morgans over there. Nothing changes, and they're still beating the pants off us, as they're manufacturing cheaper. The Donald's McDonald's over here isn't going to manufacture cheaper Big Macs than theirs. They have all our proprietary information. No, we deal with China, now, we don't push them around.
I think I already mentioned how we could do that. An "eye for an eye" approach does work with rational people. The way that mutual assured destruction, IE: MAD, in which MAD is an eye for an eye philosophy, it keeps the peace in the nuclear age.
A. The Chinese manufacturers make WORLD coins (Germany, Canada, Russia, etc.) not just those of the USA. Their laws are not our laws and vice versa just as with the USA any other country so don't expect them to obey our laws. We do not have jurisdiction over the world. B. The fakes come in through the back door so "The Donald" wouldn't be able to tax these either. Nor apply a Red Book pricing to them.
We can't get folks that make fakes in the US to put copy on them. What chance do we have of getting China to do so?
I know the solution! Let's start faking all the rare Chinese coins and sell them to their collectors!
Not really a solution Thad, because doing that is illegal for us. And besides, do you really believe their govt. would care if we did ?
Some of the first examples of the current generation of ultra high quality fakes were actually counterfeit rare Chinese coins. They were marketed to collectors outside of China due to legal reasons, but I'm sure plenty of them have made their way back by now.
