    Pan and Daphnis.jpg
Pan was the God of shepherds and flocks. Pan had horns, beard, puck nose, tail, goat’s feet, was covered with hair and dwelt in grottos. He is said to have had a terrific voice that could strike terror in those who heard it. The English word “panic” apparently has its roots from Pan. This noisy goat-footed god sometimes leads the nymphs in dances & he sometimes stirs up panic.

Pan was apparently fond of music and is regarded as inventor of the syrinx (shepherd’s pipes or panpipes).

Pan Obv 3.JPG So the item above Pan’s shoulder is called a “lagobolon” or “pedum”. I don’t know about you folks but I had no idea what a lagobolon or pedum was until I looked it up:

lagobolon (noun) a hunter's stick for striking & hunting hares

    Pedum (noun) pē′dum a shepherd's crook.

Apparently, it is a strong, multi-purpose stick that can be used for balance, examining dangerous undergrowth, snaring objects and for defense against attack by predators. (Panacea for pasture prancing).

Now let’s all partake in some pile-on Pandering and post more coins of Macedonia, Antigonas, & Pan.

I'm still in the 'market' for that 'convex' type, C-89---among sooo many others...

It's an absolutely wonderful coin!!!!.... and I LOVE the narrative info----especially now that I seem to need to have my memory constantly refreshed.

I'm also looking forward to what the others will post!!

http://coins.thefuntimesguide.com/2010/05/coin_collectors.php He had some awesome US trade dollars as I recall.

I added the Macedonian Pan coin to my want list when I saw Eng's coin. It would be nice to see the monogram & pointy stars on Eng's coin.

Perhaps it’s time to start a thread for everyone to post their Gods and Goddesses alphabetically. Have we done that before? I wonder who at CT could possibly start & administrate such a thread.;) http://www.gods-and-monsters.com/list-of-greek-gods-goddesses.html
We might include alternate names & some of the more famous heroes and demigods for good measure. I could post my new Pan coin under F for Faunus.:D
