The Mint can tell by the credit card address and the name of the credit card holder. I believe you are required to have a credit card for these subscriptions so that limits a little of the monkey business. But if it was one per person then at least it would keep the horders away on the best coins initially and leave some for the little guy that just wants one for his collection. If the mint put on the website that those abusing the subscription process could be banned from further use of the subscription service then that might add some spice to it. I have nothing against large orders but I don't see why they offer subscriptions for the dealers. If they are available when the coin comes on the mint website on the official launch day then they can always order a gazillion if the mint wants.
The problem is, how do you define a dealer ? For that matter, why would anyone want more than 2 or 3 sets of anything unless they were planning to sell them. And if you plan to sell them - what makes you different than a dealer ? Yeah tthere might be the rare buyer who orders 5 or 6 sets, or even up to 10 sets, for his kids and grandkids. But I'd bet a good deal that they are few and far between.
The average American has something over 5 credit cards, and I doubt very much whether dealer employees have the same credit card numbers as their employers. In the real world there is no way to enforce a 1-per limit on subscriptions!
I think in order to make a subscription you have to first have an account. In order for that to happen you need to supply an email address and lots of personal information including telephone numbers and a credit card. That is a lot of information that must be included. I'm not sure many can do that for mutiple orders and make it so they appear to be different individuals. All that being said I think the mint already let the cat out of the bag on this one so they can't go back now but at least they should make it so if somebody wants to subscribe but the limit of subscriptions has been reached they will take one subscription off of the ten ordered by someone so they get nine and that person gets his one. I still think one per person is fair and is best for the hobby, the more that get the coins they want the happier everyone one is at the end of the day.
I could just get my mom to subscribe and reimburse her if I waned to game the system. (not that I have that kind of money).
And then, you have 2 of 15,000 sets. I don't think the Mint really cares about that - a limit would probably be directed towards large coin dealers that have 20, 30, 40... employees, each of whom orders as many sets as they are able to and is reimbursed by their employer.
Looks like the subscriptions for the Spouse coins are gone from the mint website already. Hope everyone that wanted a subscription got in!
I placed an order on May 1st. The mint cancelled it saying that I cancelled it online, which I know I didn't. They say there's nothing they can do. I did everything right; and got ****ed. I'm done dealing with the US Mint. I'm done collecting coins. From here on, the vultures can pick each other apart without my participation.
That's a pretty drastic step for missing out on one Mint purchase! Just curious - have you been collecting coins, or investing in coins?
Collecting only. I have no interest in investing in coins. I've tracked the First spouse coins since they were announced last year and followed every announcement. I placed my order the first day they were available. Now I look forward to being reminded for the next 10 years that I missed out on an issue I had as much right to as anyone else. The big dealers (and their employees, family members, neighbors, pets, whatever) just ate everything up and didn't leave a crumb. I'm sure they'll be selling the sets for 2 or 3 times the issue price. The Mint employees couldn't care less. It may seem drastic, but this experience really has ruined it for me.
I saw someone called the mint and they may have the subscription back up tomorrow. Maybe they took it down to dump out some of the dealer orders. I'm also not convinced this series will max out at the 40,000 per design, the last $10 gold only sold about 30,000 and that goes back a few years. This one may be different but they can't possibly have maxed out at 40,000 in a couple of weeks.
dont worry dreamer94 -- dont . this series wont last long, and all the folks who 'gobbled' up all subscription will be canceling them .. so you WILL be able to get onboard .. and i doubt it will be too long off ...
I spoke with two customer service reps and a supervisor (who hung up on me). They were pretty clear that the 40,000 had sold out and the only option at this point will be waiting lists.
OK, now I'm really confused. The mint site now has the First Spouse 4 coin proof subscripton listed again, but there's no option to buy it. The only link is to an explanation of the 10 unit limit. Moreover, "My subscriptions" now lists an active subscription. Perhaps my phone call to the mint paid off. ........or perhaps, ND86 is lurking out there somewhere............. If so, thanks.
OK, now we're really through the looking glass. The following notice has been posted: First Spouse One-Half Ounce Gold Proof Coins – Four-Coin Set The United States Mint has made a decision to not make available proof and uncirculated four-coin sets for the First Spouse Program in 2007, thus also eliminating the 2007 subscription program. If you have enrolled in the subscription program, you will be notified by the United States Mint of the cancellation. Individual product options will be available beginning June 19, 2007 at 12:00 Noon (ET). Is this some kind of a joke?
i dont know... ND86 would probablyy know for sure... it does sound weird!!!! but if its posted on their site....???
It would appear that the customer service reps I spoke to knew nothing about this change. Perhaps that explains the cancellation. Has anyone else been notified that their subscription was cancelled?
It seems that they max out the 40K, and then decided to cancel them so they can actually hit the open market. Be prepared for a complete buyout on June 19. I think I have seen this movie before........ ah, yes, "20th anniversary AGE set"... here we come all over again. Good Luck!!!
