Here is another special one that I acquired from a MM Open House event .. Sorry that my photography isn't great, but hopefully my new iPhone 6s will be better ..
It's been my experience (I've been teaching coin photography at another forum for almost 10 years) that iPhones have by far the best coin imaging cameras of any smartphone, and are as good as any point-and-shoot camera for the purpose. Start with these three steps: 1) Lose the plastic flip, whether the coin is still inside it or not. It distorts the image if you try to shoot thru it, and reflects light back into the lens if the coin is sitting on it, hampering the camera's ability to define proper image parameters. 2) Square the camera to the coin. Macro photography involves lesser depth of field, and it's difficult to get the whole surface in focus if the lens plane and coin are not parallel. You can just lay the phone on a box, pointing down at the coin. 3) Delayed or remote shutter. Let the camera trigger the shot, not your finger. That introduces vibrations which, at this magnification, compromise sharpness.
Start a thread when you get it. I'll be happy to help see what we can do to dial it in; most of the work aside what I mentioned above will be about lighting. That's what I like about iPhone cameras - they tend to make correct choices about exposure parameters in macro imaging. Whoever wrote the firmware was obviously concerned about macro performance.
A beautiful collection!!! I have had many of mine slabbed by ANACS, just for the attribution, and grade confirmation. That is really quite a nice set of Daniel Carr's work. Once again, I think his issues are quite artistic and definitely do not have problems with their genuineness. Apparently, ANACS shares my views, as they attribute them as tokens, and indicate the origin as Daniel Carr work, not US Mint coinage (obviously, those are the fantasy coins). The imaginative tokens are another story, and are equally creative and interesting. As regards the fraud issue and the hobby law, it is obvious to me that Mr. Carr has made it extremely clear that these are Fantasy Issues and not intended to be a copy of coins minted for circulation. Last time I looked, there is no 1965D Peace Dollar, nor was there ever said issue. Same goes for his other fantasy coinage.
Thanks MD That picture just happened to be on my phone, but is just a tiny part of my DC collection .. I didn't intend to hijack your thread, but maybe since it's titled "Another Daniel Carr token for me", we could use it ,with your permission, to show off our different examples of his work . The majority of my collection is in the SDB, but I'll bring some home and photograph them with Superdaves advice after my new iPhone arrives .. I would like to get much of my collection slabbed by Anacs, but it will be a monumental task as I have so many pieces.. I would rather submit them in person, but unfortunately they seem to travel to every state for shows except the one I live in . I live less than 60 miles from the Philly Mint , yet can't find a show anywhere even remotely close .. Baltimore and Gettysburg are probably the closest and that's still quite a haul for me as I'm down by the shore . One drawback though with ANACS is that they don't add some of the variety details to the label as I've seen from some examples on eBay . Pre and post finishes are one, but there are others as in the 1910-D Indian , which had a Variety A, B and Prooflike.. I feel Dan is an artist and a numismatist and would like to be taken seriously as both .. I believe that one day down the road his works will be catalogued in some guide, besides his own website catalog .The fact that he uses some past artists non-copyrighted designs means nothing to me as he creates a new piece that never existed prior.. I like the edginess of his work and in some cases the parody , not to mention the extremely small mintage amounts of most designs .. I only discovered him 4 years ago, but set out to build one of the best collections of his work . I just wished I lived near the Denver area where there are so many coin clubs and shows where members regularly trade and sell his work including himself . Being limited to the Internet and contacts makes the acquisitions that much more difficult .. Unfortunately my limited bankroll forced me to miss out on some examples that came on the market and probably won't be seen again for quite awhile . I guess in summation I collect many different things and found Dan's work to be something interesting and different from the norm .. MD if you don't have one already I suggest trying to acquire his 2014 Clark Gruber Proof 1/4 ounce token .. That piece is just gorgeous and mirror like in hand , however there are many more I could suggest .. I've been reading all of the hate on the Internet the past 4 years, so it's good to talk to other people that truly enjoy what he creates ..
How is it that the Moderators have not banned or suspended you from this forum ? Your comments and behavior are nothing short of Trollish .. It's a shame that they have not taken actions against you already .. If you don't understand what Trollish behavior is then try Googling it and see what you learn .. You offend and disrespect everyone that you direct your comments towards and never have a single positive thing to add to this forum .. I feel bad for you as my teenagers have way better manners ..
Get off your back ??? Out of left field you jump back into the this thread and state that you would want to use a pic of one of my favorite pieces as a toilet seat .. I mean really, who is the one that needs to back off ??
And what you are posting is any better than what he posted? You are being just as insulting as he is. Now I'm being insulting. Maybe the mods should get rid of all of us.
Yes ban us all close down the site and all coin related sites. Then maybe I could save some more money
Maybe you should go back to page 1 and read the entire thread .. The Miderator already warned him that it was already enough .. A new member posts a picture of one of their favorite tokens and another member states they would use it for a toilet seat .. How would you react as a collector ?? This guy Eddie does nothing but stir the pot and try to create drama .. Perhaps I made a mistake joining this forum if this is how members are treated by one another
Hang in there Bigpoppa 99.9% on the folks on here are good people and will help you. THAT GUY IS A BIG NOTHING...hiding behind his computer, I wouldn't be surprised if he is just some young punk living in his parents basement
I calculated that if all coin sites and hobby related businesses were closed down, I would have saved over a million dollars. Maybe I should jut give up and retire from the coin business. Seriously--I REALLY agree with Bigpoppa--Daniel Carr's work is special and edgy. It is definitely original, despite some of it using previous designs. If criticized, I won't get into another food-fight on this page--instead I will continue to advocate for the work that I really like, despite the criticism of others. After all, that is what this hobby is all about; if one loves an aspect of the coin hobby, pursue it, no matter what the critics say.
