Just for fun, I am posting this coin for those not otherwise occupied until tomorrow's football games... It's a gold 1/6 stater of Lesbos, Mytilene and a coin I am bidding on and probably will lose in the last few minutes before the auction on e-Bay ends---like I usually do LOL The described reverse is familiar to all of us, but the obverse seems to suggest a 'melting' prehistoric ceratopsid LOL Feel free to offer your interpretations of the imagery--- Hint: It is NOT a melting ceratops !!! And the other image is probably what you think it is. EDIT: I will post the answer Sunday AM for those not cheating and googling before then.
Coincidentally those are the same images that are on a mars rock that NASA is going to report about on Monday. j/k
Well, the obverse is definitely a sphinx (slightly off-flan, so the wings and head blend together) ... Ummm, and I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that the reverse is Wile E. Coyote?
Well, it seems those owning or otherwise familiar with 'Greeks' have the answer---A MAN-faced Sphinx and a Winged Lion, reverse and obverse respectively. The 'man'-faced sphinx is somewhat unusual as it is, but also because that reverse is more typically an 'incuse'.....and that winged lion (or the fore-parts of one) appears to be anything but that LOL----I suppose, among several reasons, the softness of the metal combined with normal circulation has distorted the image. I'll try to attach another coin of this type (Silver) for easier visual comparison:
Ummm, he posted the answer in the thread above (what happens in your head?) However, the dude has obviously been deprived of Saturday morning cartoons, for it is obviously a Coyote-classic!!
Guys and Gals, I already confirmed the answer that most of you have posted (Winged, Man-Faced Sphinx and Foreparts of a Winged Lion above)...I listed it a bit early (EST) since I have a few things to do before I get totally immersed until the wee hours of Monday morning watching football!!! And then it's MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL.... Go Jets!! MAYBE, they'll even be a 'Wild Card' contender this year---ABOUT TIME!!! LOL By the way, I'm still holding a slight lead on that coin bid, but I''m confident' someone will pass my firm maximum shortly LOL
@Mikey Zee I'm vicariously living through your auction excitement...you'll have to update if you win or lose, I'm on the edge of my seat!
