Haha I'm looking at the East side of the obverse, and reverse. I see a big groove inside the rim. On the reverse it almost cuts into the top of AMERICA. However the letters are :"on top" of the groove and are not damaged.

I see what you're looking at...but don't know what it is...off to read the books

Now I see it. It's from a worn die.

Did the outer edge of the die break off or just wear flat?

It's what happens when you use real metal against zinc one too many times. :)

Despite being mostly zinc, a cent die, for the most part, never touches the zinc.

The outer tips of the letters in AMERICA extend out past the edge of the crevice. They are normal height. I think it would have to be a planchet error, or the planchet was damaged during the strike. The die would have to come together after the groove was impressed for the letters to be raised above the level of the groove. What I'm saying is it cant be post strike damage or the letters would be pushed down into the groove.
