Here are some damaged coins I found over the years while metal detecting. The Kennedy Reverse is so bad you can only see the Eagle. Lawnmowers, shovels, backhoes and park renovations are the likely culprits
It's not terrible nor valuable, at least not to me, but I found this when I was a kid working in a grocery store after school. I've had it for nearly 40 years. It has a name on it and I asked around at the time, to see if anybody knew the man who's name was on it, but never did find anyone who did. It has a number on it also. Well, about 5 years ago I was going through some stuff and ran across it again. The internet is great for finding things that you didn't know existed. I searched the name and lo and behold it popped up. With the name was a WW2 military ID number that matched the one on the coin. The guy was born in 1911 in the same county I was, and he enlisted on June 6th, 1942. But that's all that I found. It would have been great if I could have gotten it back to him because I know he carried it for a long time.
It use to be thought that if you put a penny on top of your car battery it would help keep the corrosion of of the terminals. (sacrificial anode) That is what some of these pennys look like.
I know as the original poster that Ive haven't posted since I started this thread but here are my late entries. Also Paddyman is in the lead but were all winners as long as we keep this hobby/ industry going! All of these coins were found in front of my house in the street by me or my wife. Across the street is liquor store so I'm not surprised I find loose change. there is another one but I cant get a good pic. its a penny on par with what paddyman's half he posted. Sorry for lack of attention I"m working a lot and cant afford internet at my place, yes people still exist without internet.
