Your poll having only 3 choices is biasing people's responses. I do like it though. I can't choose between 63 and 64 given the pics, so I'll assume you bought a nice 63.
The majority vote is where NGC puts it. MS-64. I think it could go 64+, but the reverse is a particularly weak strike, and there are some small nicks on the obverse that stand out a bit. I think this may be all she can muster. I'm VERY happy with it, and it is now in my registry set which is at 70%. It's a very nice coin. I went with 65 on it On a side note...I bought a raw 24-S from a dealer at a show. He had it marked XF45, and I knew it was far nicer than that. Sent it in to PCGS......came back 62.
There are always some that are overly critical and don't pay attention to the details of the coin. You hit a nice score! I'm still on a huge learning curve, but getting better at it. I have some 1927 PDS peace dollars that I'm trying to grade right now and I think a few of them may go MS. I'm building up a lot to send off for grading. And thanks for the 65! Because of the obverse - it definitely had a chance. The reverse is a really weak strike. You can barely read "PEACE" at the bottom. I think that alone keeps it out of gem status.
I think it is a gorgeous coin--I LOVE the patina. The toning is just right--neither too dark, nor too garish, as Peace Dollar natural toning is generally not as available in vivid colors as Morgans, due to storage differences. I agree with you--the somewhat weak strike on the reverse probably cost the coin a 65. I had originally said high end 64, and for that date, that is a really super find. Many examples of the 24S are either overdipped "blast white," or battleship gray coins--yours has great eye appeal. I think if I were grading it, I would have gone MS 64* for eye appeal.
