Nazi coinage experts needed unkown coin

Hello all its my first post and the coin I wish to dicuss has driven me to it. Typically I only collect medieval silver coinage from poland, because the wife is polish but.....I was in a rather impressive coin shop in the oldtown Gdansk Poland yesterday searching for my usual.(currently on vacation meeting my new family-im from KY) And I bought a coin from nazi germany. When I return home I will post a pic of it. I am fully aware that NO coins were ever released with HITLERS BUST. But this is for sure a 50 pfennig coin because it says it right on the coin. Oddly enough its not nickel, I believe its copper.The shop owner seemed to know his stuff about coins and says he had never seen one before, also told me no coins were ever released with his face and because of this it is uncirculated.He said he knew nothing about the coin except that a fellow collector friend of his had seen one before. It is the size of a penny.Any info would be appreciated!

Welcome aboard,Glowplug.There were no coins issued with Adolf Hitler's portrait on them.There is a pattern 5 Reichmark listed in Krause that depicts both Hitler & a Swastika on the obverse.

Can you please post some photos of your item?

Just because it has a denomination doesn't make it a legitimate coin, and a 50 pfennig is clearly not a 5 reichsmark pattern!

I just hope you paid a reasonable price for your bit of exonumia.

Or, perhaps, they are just ignorant and they are offering one of the several coins minted in the '30s with a bust of Paul von Hindenburg, the German military hero and President, who appointed Herr Schicklgruber to the post of Chancellor.

 

It is purely designed as a medal with a design that is masquerading as the coin design.It has no numismatic value whatsoever.

That description is wrong,as there were no commemorative or circulation coins with Hitler's head on it.As I explained before,there was a pattern 5 Reichsmark that is listed in Krause that depicts both Hitler & a Swastika.

An "unofficial commemorative" is a fancy marketing name for a private issue non-circulating, non-legal tender medal.

In other words, if they call it a coin in their auction they are in fact lying, not mistaken, since they obviously know what it is.

 

Legally speaking,the vendor can be prosecuted under the relevent fair trading legislation for misrepresenting an item as something that it isn't.

I think my thread got hijacked for argumentive purposes! Anywhooo, Everything in poland is cheap so regardless of value im cool with the coin for novelty sake. Wish I could post a pic aggggg! the front has hitlres bust it says: erneuerer deutschlands on the left and right respectivly and heil hitler on top and bottom respectivly, with four tiny swastikas between all the words. The obverse has a large swastika with 50 laid on top of it, equal in size. It says av ich hab mitgenholfen from left to right around the edge then on the bottom surrounded by 2 tiny swastikas the word opferpfennige. It may not have ever been intended for use as currency but im still curious as to what it is! Adian over the years seems to be into nazi coins and has strong views on other subjects as well. I think you two might hit it off.

 

The word Opferpfennig indicates it's a donation token. Those are not coins but were given out as kind of receipts, to people who donated to the nazi party, to some winter help campaign, etc.

The "AV" is a little misleading; that text actually says "AUCH ICH HAB MITGEHOLFEN" which translates to something like "I helped too". It was particularly the youth organizations HJ and BDM that organized such collections in the streets. As a donation receipt you would get one of those.

There is one "30" (Pfennig) piece in brass, a "50" piece in bronze, and a 1 Mark receipt in nickel, I think. They came in various designs as far as I know.

They were party youth organizations the Hitler Youth (Hitler Jugend) & the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädel).

 

its crazy how much history you learn just by studying coins!!! NUTS!
