English Hammered Coins

I'm going to second that you put your work together and publish something. Maybe a Redbook series "Guide to Edwardian Hammered Coins." Get Q.D. Bowers to write the intro...some fancy pictures...

I've been gone from this thread, and forum in general, for sooo long. I need to find a way to keep myself interested since I got side tracked with my baseball collection again.

Great coins have been posted and some interesting information.

 

Well, looks to me like you've got 11 Aurelians and 57 monarchs to go - plenty to keep you in the game!

Here is my earliest known double struck Lincoln penny:



The planchet must have stuck to the upper die and got another blow with the hammer - a very cool Henry III error coin from Lincoln England.

 

Here is a changeover pair minted in Canterbury pennies, the first being from Henry III and the second from Edward I:





These coins were minted in the very early 1270s - the last of Henry III's coinage and the beginning of Edward I's coinage in 1272. They are from the Colchester hoard of 14,065 pennies found in a lead vessel in a house site in 1969. It is conjectured that they may have been buried by members of the Jewish community prior to a pogrom in 1278 and never recovered.

 

Here is my first purchase of 2016 (sadly...). This short cross penny was issued under King John, but bearing the name of his father, Henry II (as would the coins of his elder brother, Richard). I've been bidding on some of John's coins issued in Ireland which actually contain his name, but unfortunately the cost kept going higher than I wanted to pay... Oh well, I'll grab one at some point.

That is true Mat... But I love the time period that it's worth putting my money towards them. Chances are when the new school year starts and I'm teaching ancient history again rather than medieval (where I am now), I'll end up splurging on a bunch of ancients again...

 

Congrats on your sweet new coin, FitzNigel ... sadly, I don't have any neat examples "yet" (I had one on my last auction-hunt, but pulled the trigger on a different coin before I got to that era)

... man, I really need to score a sweetie in that coin-category (great addition)

 

Just received these two items. The first one was a bit of a surprise, as I just put in the opening bid and no one challenged me... I really bid on a whim, but am happy to have another English Monarch penny added to my (as of yet small) set.

The second I am a little more excited about. It too went for the opening bid, and while not the best condition (and the softness of the features does worry me a little...), the Aquitaine Deniers of Henry II don't seem to be as available as those of Richard I, or of Henry's English issues.

Wow! That would be a fun course! An overview of the Ancient World? Unless, I misunderstand that you will be teaching several different Ancient courses. No big overseas travels for me at the moment, so I will be trying to hit the local shows...
