I went on Ebay today to look at some error coins that I am watching and I clicked on a section I had never seen before. They tried to give an explanation on how the 1955 Doubled Die Cent was made... And it was the worst explanation ever! Read this - quote "In 1955, a young man working the night shift at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia didn’t notice that the machine used to make the pennies was a fraction of an inch off from where it was supposed to be. As a result, around 24,000 faulty pennies were put into circulation. Today, these “double-die” cents can fetch thousands of dollars" closed quote That's the worst description I have ever read! Unbelievable! Here is the section on Ebay - (I want to share this webpage with you) http://www.ebay.com/gds/7-Exceptional-Error-Coins-on-eBay-Worth-a-Fortune-/10000000205446688/g.html?_trksid=p2050601.m1256&_trkparms=&clkid=9137280380664268461
In all honesty why would anyone think EBay would have any knowledge about anything except maybe coding? Most likely EBay received that information and just posted it. Someone, somewhere must be getting a good laugh.
I got the feeling this was one of those guides, or reviews, or whatever they`re called, from older eBay site and it was submitted by some user. In current reincarnation of eBay website design they just converted them all and put the "published by eBay".
It's an interesting twist. So many people want to believe their shiny new shelf doubled penny is rare hub doubling. Now it sounds like someone is trying to explain hub doubling as machine doubling. What a country.
From Ebay: 6. 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent You’re probably wondering how a penny could fetch so much. This penny — a 1909 penny printed in San Francisco — is worth several thousand dollars and it's all because it’s one of the only coins that featured the initials of the designer directly on the coin. Americans at the time thought that the initials were too prominent so eventually the coins were taken out of circulation and reprinted in 1918. Therefore, the ones that escaped being reprinted are worth a small fortune now. This one is going for $38,500. Printed coins? lol
