Macrinus and Diadumenian AE27 of Markianopolis, Moesia Inferior, 217-218 AD, 10.9g, 27mm OBV: AV K OΠEΛ CEVH MARKRINOC K M OΠEΛ ANTΩNEINOC, Dual confronting busts of Macrinus and Diadumenian. REV: YΠ ΠONTIANOY MAPKIANOΠOΛEITΩN, Dionysos or Bonus Eventus standing left over altar. Epsilon in right field. REF: Pending. Similar to SNGCop 222 and Varbanov I 1142 I'd like some assistance with this coin attribution. This coin is very similar to SNGCop 222. The legend placement is nearly the same on the obverse, it is different on the reverse. On my coin, there is no legend letters in exergue. In the SNGCop 222, there is the last 3 letters of the legend in exergue. Also, my coin looks like it has a epsilon field mark right, SNGCop 222 has a epsilon field mark left. I'm wondering if you guys could confirm the details I have for my coin as well as a reference number. I would greatly appreciate it. I have been discussing this coin at a Roman Provincial Coin group as well. There is a certain amount of uncertainty about this coin. Another member of the group that owns a copy of Greek Imperial Coins by Ivan Varbanov has this to say about my coin.
Nice coin. Ya gotta love the Provincials. In many instances, they are more interesting then the Rome counterparts.
I like Roman Provincial coins for sure and I have developed a liking for them. At first they were intimidating to me as for trying to figure them out with Greek letters most of the time. Don't get me wrong, I still love collecting my Roman Imperial coins for sure. I got this coin as a free gift from a dealer in Cyprus. I recommended a buyer to him who apparently got a lot of coins and the dealer made a lot of money. The dealer appreciated it enough to give me a coin. I am definitely thankful for sure.
Terrific coin Gil ----and I must admit I'm developing a greater appreciation of Provincials more and more as time passes....somewhat ironic since I avoided them in preference to Imperials for so long. Sounds like my kind of dealer LOL
cool pentassarion GG! there are fun/a pain to attribute...the exact ratio of one to the other varies. may be a good candidate for a bit of cleaning.
I am definitely considering cleaning the coin but I'm leaving it alone for now as I am working on about 10 coins right now, about 25 more in that lot. Then another 17 coin lot, some of them can be cleaned. lol
The coin is definitely difficult to attribute which is why I'm asking for help. So far, no exact attribution has been found yet.

He helped me figure out what the attribution is.
Awesome addition, Daryl ... Ummm, does this count as Macrinus and Diadumenian? ... *whatev* ... Your new coin has very cool eye-appeal ... Oh, and I love the obvious red-spot on the reverse (it's kinda like Jupiter, eh?) => that's a space joke, nerds!! (bonus-points?)

Could we have a review of any of the references quoted in this thread by any of you that actually own the book? I feel the need for a book but what one?
