I agree with Steve: archaic coins are awesome Technically, the archaic era ends and classical begins in the early to mid fifth century BCE, so I only have a few reverse incuse punch coins which are archaic: KINGS OF LYDIA, temp. Ardys - Alyattes, EL hekte, 630-564 BCE, considered by many to be the first true coin made. This is one of the earliest types of Lydian lion. IONIA, Samos drachm, 510-500 BCE. Design within incuse square. CARIA, Kindya tetrobol, 510-480 BCE. Geometric pattern within incuse square. IONIA, Klazomenai drachm, c. 500 BCE. Needs a reshoot. IONIA, Klazomenai diobol, 499-494 BCE; unpublished in this denomination with winged boar flying left IONIA, Klazomenai diobol, 499-494 BCE. Hmm, all of my Pigasus coins need to be reshot-- my photography skills have improved. KYRENAIKA, Barke hemidrachm, 480-450 BCE. Not an incuse punch reverse but archaic. Very rare. Aegina obol, 475-470 BCE Aegina stater, 456-431 BCE. My Aeginas may not truly be "archaic".
Here are a few more with incuse elements, although from a slightly later period. CARIA, Mylasa hemiobol, 450-400 BCE THRACE, Byzantion AR siglos, 340-320 BCE ARGOLIS, Argos triobol or hemidrachm, 330-270 BCE ARGOLIS, Argos triobol or hemidrachm, 330-270 BCE
No. Early Roman coins are later than the period in which the punch reverses were used. There are Italian and Sicilian coins with incuses with designs but they did not use the one sided design with rough punch reverse uses in the earlier period in the East.
Oooops, sorry about that (I started this thread and then went upstairs and ate dinner and then => I fell asleep and had a nap) TIF is very astute and found a link to one of my old threads (thanks for the link to the past, TIF) ....... yah, that thread is now a couple of years old (man, where does all of the time go, eh?) I think I'll merely pull a few of my favourite oldies back from that thread and then take a look if I've bought any new babies since then (not too many, but maybe a few?) ... so here are some oldies, but still goodies ...
