Barber Quarter - what happened?

I got this barber quarter today at a flea market.

I guess I have two questions:

    a. What happened to this thing? (Imagination welcome!)
    and
    b. This coin is in incredible shape - what would be its condition if it wasn't beat up? I weighed it and it comes in at almost exactly 6.25 grams. It's really shiny, so it might have been cleaned, but the detail is just amazing. I hope the details come out in the scan.

It's a shame this happened to such a nice coin.

    What a shame.
Looks like it was put into a vise.
And someone really hated the design.

Maybe it was damaged during slabbing operations at SGS... which knocked it down to PR69* DCAM

Looks like it was a AU ish coin before someone did something terrible to it. Lawn mower, hammer, etc. That thing definitely took a beating.

It looks like it was dipped. Maybe someone was experimenting on a damaged coin.

That is certainly a shame, as it was once a nice AU coin.

Heck, that coin is definitely munted. It is worth its value only as bullion. It was a very nice coin before someone took what looks like a pair of pliers or vicegrips to it.

I'd say it had been dropped into a piece of industrial machinery at one point and time.
Could have been in an old press or something ?
I doubt that whatever it was would have been on purpose.
If someone put it into a press for auto panels or something, it would look a lot worse.

I believe a vise would be my guess. That is certainly a crying shame that someone would do that. But, I guess it could have been alot worse...he could have gotten ahold of the 1901-s quarter.

I wonder what a genuine 1901-S quarter in that kind of damaged condition would actually sell for?

My 1916D Merc is damaged, although not this badly. It appears to have been struck with something, so I imagine somebody found it metal detecting and hit it with the shovel while digging it up. It grades (by my inexpert opinion) about a G/VG. When I bought it I paid about 2/3 the asking price for an undamaged coin in that condition.
