What do you make of this copper beauty? I'm trying to ID the Newcomb variety / type. How would you ID it, and what are the differences to look for? I found this, but sometimes the subtle details that differentiate the varieties completely escape me: http://www.coinfacts.com/large_cent...819_large_cents/1819_large_cent_varieties.htm
N-6 There are 10 varieties in 1819. one of the first things I look at is the position of the point of leaf below the last S of STATES. On this one it is between the center of the S and the right edge. That is only true of three of the 1819 varieties N-2, N-6 and N-9. On N-2 the point of leaf is left of the center of the upright of the F in OF. that is not true of the OP coin. N-6 N-9 The position of the leaf point is enough to tell it is N-6, but for further confrmation look at the point of leaf below the C in AMERICA. On N-6 it is right of center of the C and on N-9 it is left of center. On N-6 and N-9 the point of leaf below the F is right of the center of the upright of the F.
