awww man, that was an awful story (I just looked it up on wiki ... see below, if you want to feel crappy and cry) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laika
@stevex6 I can't imagine the stress and hardship of doing what she did. As the great Pericles said "For illustrious men have the whole earth as their tomb." Laika has the Cosmos as hers. RIP
Stop it guys! I'm bummed out about my dog. He's facing a health crisis... That photo is about 2 1/2 years old...he looks the same, just a few more grey hairs. Poor guy can't control his hind legs...
Oh man, I am a big dawg lover! Got 3 of my own, and have raised many in my life! They are the best friends!
=> man, poor Laika must have been scared s-less!! (that's such a sad avatar-photo ... I hate it) I don't want to send these guys into space ...
TOTALLY-TOTALLY agree. At least they euthanized Laika, but what a terrifying experience for the pup! Right after he was saved from the streets!
Laika was not euthanized, she died a very very bad death. She basically overheated to death within 5 hours of achieving orbit. Poor thing.
Ooops, re-read the article: Euthanized...ugh, that was what they TOLD people... you are right...overheated...horrid.
I suppose you have a point Steve. Back to the Magnus Maximus Siliqua again. Though Laika shall return one day. Interesting how this thread started by talking about the Roman Republic and ends talking about a brave little stray dog. RIP Laika.
Hey, that is the kinda change and evolution of discussion that I really enjoy in my thread! We went from Defending the Republic to Going to Space!!! What leaps of progress in Mankind!
Thanks, Mag-Max (yah, it was just a bit too much ... thinking about that poor ol' unsuspecting dog being shot into space only to be burned alive was a wee too much for me ... sorry, and thanks again)
It's fine coin brother. I cried when I first read about her and still to this day I cry about her. Life just isn't fair! Thanks and best.
Sad story. I've loved all my dogs, the last one being very close to me rather than to the wife. For me I'm not sure I agree that life is unfair. Life is just that. Life. The world is a better place because Laika lived, not because of how she died. Many sad stories of death, but we can't have death without life to begin it. Rest In Piece Laika.
Checkout James Beach from Owosso, Michigan who carries a wide variety of aes graves at affordable prices. He does not have a website. I see him at the annual and summer FUN show in Florida, don't know what other shows he attends.
Speaking of dogs...went back to the vet today and she was pleased with the progress he's made. He's acting more like himself too.
In 1957 animals did not have the 'rights' they do today. I was a high school student in a summer of 1963 program at a major university for 'future scientists' and did a project requiring me to kill 57 white rats. I trust you are aware of the volunteers for the proposed Mars mission. http://www.mars-one.com/ So far they have 78,000 applicants for the 24 slots. Before this could any of you identify Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev? I couldn't but sure remember Laika. How about the several Alberts? I remember the 1959 hoopla when Able and Baker survived. I was very interested in space then. I'm too old for Mars.
@dougsmit Interesting. I remember reading that there were even Laika brand Cigarettes at the time? {One Google search later} As if this story can't get anymore tragic and bizarre.
