In this case with or w/o the slab the coin is worth about $35 bucks.

2nd Gererations slab with the outer ring missing but it is still a neat looking slab that way.

Those old slabs almost always add an additional $10 or more to the raw value which is under $30.

Well, why on earth would someone crack the outer shell?? Certainly they didnt think the coin would upgrade. Maybe they wanted to pass this off as a gen 1 slab. It worked, i didnt even notice til i got home to check vam#

Robert Paul got it before I had a chance to answer. It is a damaged PCGS 2 slab. A two piece slab with the outer band broken off.

Why would someone break off the outer band? Sometimes because they just didn't know better, sometimes they just didn't care, but the most common cause was probably dropping the slab. Drop one on a hard surface (such as a concrete floor at a show) and the outer band can break.

The shell has simply been removed from your slab.

They break... it's the thing that takes the most stress when you drop them. It is SOMETIMES possible to replace the band. Well at least I know somebody who knows somebody who claims to have done it.

I am very late to the party but I can answer your question. This appears to be a third generation PCGS OGH slab. The first slabs were just the rattlers. The second generation were the popular short lived doily holders which were basically a rattler with a plastic outer frame. The 3rd gen (the pictured coin) was the same rattler as the doily but back to a solid green label with barcode and again a plastic outer frame. When that outer frame breaks off as they sometimes do, you are left with just a rattler that has a barcode label.
