I saw this on Forvm and had to have it because it was minted during the dictatorship of Julius Caesar. I know it is worn but I still really like it. Please post your republican denarii from a similar time period. Here is the description from Forvm Roman Republic, Dictatorship of Julius Caesar, Mn. Cordius Rufus, c. 46 B.C., Silver denarius, SRCV I 440, Sydenham 976, Crawford 463/1a, RSC I Cordia 2a, Fair, graffiti, banker's marks, 3.572g, 19.8mm, 45o, Rome mint, c. 46 B.C.; obverse RVFVS III VIR, conjoined heads of Dioscuri right, wearing laureate pilei surmounted by stars; reverse MN CORDIVS, Venus standing left, scales in right and scepter in left, Cupid at shoulder;
Well, all my RR denarii are a bit earlier than the dictatorship and a few that are applicable are now pending bid and one of Brutus I posted on Al's thread... So I guess I'll post an Anthony and Octavian example I have first thing in the AM since I seem to have deleted all my older file photos... Like Bing, I want one of those too...and I noticed a few on current auction, but I've already committed to far too many already (8?) LOL
Mine be battered...shattered and tattered! Shoo-be-doo...as Mick Jagger would say... Cordius Rufus... I bought in honor of my late History Professor (for my Alexander, Roman History I-III, Greek History, and Ancient Religious courses). His front name was Rufus.
Here’s another Roman Republic minted during the dictatorship of Julius Caesar Lollius Palicanus, 46 BC AR denarius 3.73gm - 19 mm Obv: Diad. Head of Libertas r., LIBERTATIS behind Rx: View of the Rostra in the Roman Forum, ornamented with ships' beaks and surmounted by tribune's bench, PALIKANVS (or similar) above Ref: Crawford 473/1, Syd 960, SR465
When I post thumbnails they are tiny, but when I post full size images they are gigantic! Can someone tell me how to change the size of the files I upload?
At your BEHEST, I am posting a Denarius from that time period... Roman Republic (barely!) AR Denarius 42 BCE Moneyer L Mussidus Longus 16.45mm x 18.5mm elongated, 3.8g Obv: Radiate and draped bust of Sol, 3/4 face r Rev: L MVSSIDIVS LONGVS, Shrine of Venus Cloacina, circular platform inscribed below CLOACIN, 2 statues of Venus Cloacina I post this gem as it was struck in 42 BCE when Marcus Iunius Brutus died (October, by suicide). He was a Hero of the Republic as he was involved in the killing of the Tyrant Gaius Iulius Caesar - murderer of the Roman Republic.
Simple way is to open your picture in Microsoft paint; select resize; then enter the percentage you would like to resize your image to. Save. The image size in paint will be the size shown here when the image is expanded.
thanks iamtiberius!! I never knew I had Microsoft paint on my PC...but it is there...yeah, new software for me to play with!
Hmm, Roman coins struck during JC's dictatorship? Looks like I only have one: Roman Imperatorial moneyer L. Plautius Plancus, 47 BCE AR Denarius, 3.79 gm Obv: L. PLAVTIVS; facing mask of Medusa, serpents at either side of face Rev: PLANCVS; Aurora flying right and conducting the four horses of the sun. Banker's mark in left field. Damn these VA eye-glasses!!! I can hardly see the image....Oh wait, I'm wearing department store sunglasses.. Now I see the coin.
Yah admitedly, I probably get a fail for ancient Roman history ... ummm, JC's rule was between ??? ummm, 60-44 BC ??? ... *whatev* (don't judge) ... => if so, then I have a handful of examples ... L. Roscius Fabatus 59 BC Juno Sospita & Girl feeding Snake M.Aemilius Scaurus 58 BC King kneeling beside Camel & Quadriga, with scorpion D. Junius Brutus Albinus 48 BC Mars & Two Gallic Trumpets (wheel, below) L. Papius Celsus 45 BC Juno Sospita & She-wolf droppin' stick on fire with Eagle fanning the ol' flames (so fricken cool, eh?) ... ummm, do any of those babies pass muster?
Well, I might as well post these denarii since the date is right on and the moneyers were 'friends' of J.C's---but so were many of the assassins... T. Carisius, 46 BC; Sybil Herophile and Sphinx and P. Clodius M.f. Turrinus, 42 BC; Apollo and Diana Lucifera
