Anyone else notice all the errors in the 2008 Red Book???? For my American Eagles collection....the left out the option for all 2006 ASE,AGE and APE options. They have the "W" uncirc and W proof, but not the normal 2006 strikes. They also screwed up the mintage figures on some of the ASE coins by reversing the proof and Unc varities!! The editor needs a good talking too if ya ask me!!! What have you found?????
They also list prices for Silver Proof Presidential Dollars. Which... dont exist. But hey, looks like they're worth $16 in PF65.
It says right in the book - "Coin values in this book are retail prices figured from data supplied by the listed contributors approximately two months prior to publication."
Hello everyone...per Doug's posted link I filed a complaint...here is Whitman's reply from Mr. Tucker!! I appreciate him answering the email. Good morning Mr. XXXXXXX (edited for privacy) I hope this note finds you happy and in good health. Thank you for your recent feedback on the 2008 Red Book. Whitman Publishing takes its commitment to accurate and timely information very seriously. Our goal, of course, is 100% perfection, and this is something I stress to my editorial staff. The Red Book’s pricing is compiled from leading hobby experts—dealers who handle coins every day and know the market inside and out—and our numismatic information comes from a variety of experts and longtime contributors to the field. There is always the chance, as with any human endeavor, that errors will crop up from time to time, especially when thousands of line items are involved. I’m grateful that, as a loyal reader, you’ve taken the time to point out an area for improvement. I will pass your observations along to our editors. Best wishes, -- Dennis Tucker
Hmm, you'd think with the incredible rarity (can't get any rarer than non-existant, lol) they'd be worth considerably more than that. Another pretty obvious error I found is on page 334 (hard bound edition) it refers the the First Spouse coins as 1/4 ounce gold coins rather than as 1/2 ounce gold coins (a fact they could have gotten right had they bothered to look at the pictures they posted on that same page, lol...)
Actually, there was the expectation that the coins were to be struck. The bill was before congress to approval but Castle vetoed it in committee. In fact Coin World had an editorial against the silver coins. The Guide Book was simply anticipating the release, obviously in error.
Errors are always made....The publishers of the Redbook are no different than you or I...and I have made many spelling errors and have posted some errors in my Trivia items....Every daily newspaper is riddled with errors....as are the errors you made in your Thread posting which I placed in parentheses... Yep, but they jumped the gun a bit; the legislation had not passed when the book was published. They probably should have waited to see if it would pass or not before including them. However, it was not so much a blatant error than an incorrect guess, I'll give them that. They included the 2007 Gold Buffalo, First Spouse coins, and the Jamestown Commemoratives because legislation that existed at printing time indicated that they would have to come into existance during the year eventually, so they included those, even though they didn't exist yet at time of printing. However they did not list Gold Buffalo fractionals, because although the legislation for them was in discussion at the time, it had not passed yet, so it was not a sure thing. I think they should have gone the same way with the silver president dollars, not include them until it was a sure thing that they would be minted during the year (that's the way they went with the Desegregation commemorative, even though it was almost assured that legislation for it would pass, at time of printing it hadn't yet.) So it's still an error... not a big deal, but I still think they should have erred on the side of caution and at least wait for the legislation to pass (which in this case, it didn't) before including a new coin.
ok... now, no one laugh..... I just got my 2008 Red Book in the mail. (heres where you should not laugh) my last Red Book was 2002 version!! But, this 2008 Red Bookd is AWSOME.. i Love the format... is this how its been? or is it new for this release??? Either way, i really like it! (yes, i am now looking up the 'errors') lol
This is the new format, and Ken Bressett changes and adds things every edition. Since your 2002 edition everything has been re-done. Have fun.
